You can buy a litre bottle of branded whisky (e.g. Bells) in local shops in the holiday resorts in the Canary Islands for as little of 10 Euros. Gin (Gordons)can be even cheaper. How do they manage to sell it so cheaply and still make a profit.

the words duty free are a bit of a giveaway"If I know I'm going crazy, I must not be insane"0

As a side note, Fiscally the Canaries are not the EU, therefore you can only bring back 1 litre of spirits (per adult).
If you're in the Canaries you should try (and bring back using your allowance) Honey Rum (Ron Miel in Spanish). My favourite one is the Guajiro one, stronger at 30% ABV rather than cheaper 20% ones......0 -

There's been a lot of fake booze in Tenerife so be careful what you buyChange is inevitable, except from a vending machine.0

Normally where we stay in Lanzarote a litre bottle of Bells Whisky is around 11 euros. Gordons Gin is about the same. Lanzarote Duty free airport prices are about 20% higher than in the resort. We like the Torres 10 year old Brandy which we don't think you can purchase in the UK. It very good value and in our opinion it tastes great.0

We take two plastic bottles with us to the Canaries and transfer from the glass bottles. We then we put them in our hold baggage. It is a lot lighter with plastic bottles and is very unlikely to break in your case unlike glass bottles. It is always a lot cheaper to purchase in the resorts than at the Airports0

It's even higher than that.
The current excise duty for spirits in the UK is £27.66 per litre of pure alcohol so for an example I'll take a 1L bottle of 45% ABV booze.
This works out at £12.45 for excise duty alone and then you have VAT at 20% on top so if the base price of the bottle was £3, once you add excise duty and VAT, it would retail for about £18.55 and of that £18.55, just over 83% goes directly to the government.0
