    That would be my first thought. Could be the screen or the connectors to it.

    I've not been able to check yet but today my laptop has shut down 3 times. One time it said the Graphics driver had crashed and recovered.

    Did you try rolling back the driver to a previous version yet? The one that came on disk originally is a good bet.

    It did not have a disk with it. I think the fact that it is better since I upgraded the drivers I would be loth to fiddle around with trying to find older drivers.
