Um no - not necessarily. Travel insurance is not a universal catchall. There are specific inclusions and exclusions

I'm not sure the suggestion of not booking a hotel etc. which uses paypal to process card txns is very practical. I do my research on location, where do I want to stay, on hotels in the area, I read reviews about hotels, I consider price and narrow it down to one or two hotels which have vacancies and if they happen to use paypal to process card txns I've then got to ignore them and go for more expensive / less well reviewed hotels in less ideal locations. This is what I mean, this is increasingly a problem and will get worse. I'm not sure how relevant S75 is in many cases anyway if I'm booking some of them through booking.com / hotels.com etc. etc. I've probably lost any protection through that (and probably gained some). However, the good news is that since this is a touring holiday I won't be in any hotel for more than 3 nights, so if I have the odd problem I won't loose too much.

You do normally have arrange of options in booking through different sites for the same hotel, in which case simply ignore those that use PayPal.

Well, nowadays many people are booking flight, trip, holidays, through comparison site which at the same time working as intermediary as well paying processor such as Booking.com, etc ...

Not many People are going through the hotel website one after another just to specifically looking for hotel which allow CC payment. IMHO when booking for the things like holiday, travel, where where you already have travel insurance CC payment is just a bonus. If you have this option, use it if not forget it.

They will not get S75 protection but they get the best available deal, also in many cases if something goes wrong the likelyhood is that it will be covered by travel insurance anyway.

Same things with paying by CC for your flight with budget airlines. Pay by creditcard than you will pay more. In fact many people prefer to pay by debitcard when purchasing tickets with budget airlines.

Also there are increasing number of hotels in favour of other payment option such as paypal, etc. In the future the hospitality industries might add surcharge for people who prefer paying by CC similar to which already exist in budget airlines. Doing this they could cut the cost which could be passed to consumers.

Why would you need to go to the hotel website? The booking agent will tell you how you can pay, certainly booking.com do.

I've never paid in advance for a hotel by any method other than credit card. There's rarely any need. Sometimes paid cash on arrival.

Loads of travel insurance policies don't include cover for financial failure of the hotel, or fraud. Some do, but read the small print, don't assume. You don't need this if you pay by CC, or pay when you're there.

Or they could allow reservations guaranteed by CC but where you can pay by debit card/cash when there.

Well just wonder If you pay through booking.com even with credit card did you get s75 protection? Is not that booking.com here work as intermidiary ??

I've never paid booking.com anything. You pay the hotel direct, not booking.com, for the vast majority of bookings.

Apparently there are some where you pay booking.com themselves but I've never come across any, it's not their usual way of working.

Slightly off topic but I booked a flight with Ryanair last night.
Flight price in euros as departure airport is in Europe.
I was paying with a (Barclays)Visa debit card due to the cost of using a CC .
I do have a Halifax Clarity Card which I use abroad.

As I was about to pay I looked at the conversion rate and what my card would be charged in pounds. An exchange rate which clearly Ryanair have used. I clicked on the more info and in a pop up box in tiny writing it said something about ticking the box if I wanted my card provider to use their own exchange rate!

Never come across this before and it was late and I was tired so just went ahead and booked it

Does anyone know if the rate ryanair use is on a par with bank rates or would I have been better off using my Halifax CC (at extra cost) and using their euro rate ?

Sorry for the long post and hope it makes sense.
