It should be pretty obvious if DCC has been applied though.

There could be two or three things causing the difference but (as per post #2) DCC is my favourite.

Yes, if it had been one of the others it's much more likely that the OP would be aware. With DCC they can sometimes convert the currency without you being aware.

    Here is a variation.
I'm traveling abroad in a while and am booking and paying for some hotels / car hire (deposit in advance) etc. in advance. However, when I come to pay, with some retailers I either have the option of paying via paypal (no) or paying by credit card (Halifax clarity) through paypal because that is who the merchant has chosen to process their credit card transactions!
So even if I use my Halifax credit card, is it now mastercard doing the transaction conversion or is it now paypal? I suspect it is paypal and I'm not getting the better mastercard conversion rate, and I'm not sure if I'm also paying paypal a foreign loading?
Is there a way to avoid this if paypal is the merchant used by the retailer?
    Hope that makes sense.

You'll be losing out financially by using Paypal, and also losing out on Section 75 rights.

This is increasingly becoming a problem, you don't even get a choice, a merchant uses paypal presumably because they are cheaper, no choice, worse exchange rate etc. and no S75.

It should be possible to tell Paypal to process the transaction in the original currency, but they put this option in a very small font size and you may click Pay before realising.

I wouldn't book a hotel/car hire which uses paypal for deposits in any case.

If you book hotel for Holiday is not that s75 does not really matter as you would be covered by travel insurance anyway ....

Many things can go wrong with a hotel stay that s75 would cover and travel insurance wouldn't cover.
