People could only guess at this stage. But people might be able to help you in more accurate way if you post the picture of the transaction appears on your clarity card.
That won't help at this stage as all the Halifax account shows in 'latest transactions' is the name and the GBP amount, nothing more. The OP will see more detail on his statement date but that could be weeks away.

What might give more of a clue would be how the hotel show the transaction in their confirmatory email - ie AUDxxx or GBPxxx.

The receipt should say what was paid.

DCC without agreement is a valid reason for a chargeback by Visa and MasterCard.

They often don't! If you find you were actually charged by the hotel in GBP after agreeing to a price in AUD, tell Halifax you were charged without your agreement.

In similar circumstances a couple of years ago, Nationwide refunded me the difference.

Exactly. But it's down to the cardholder to make the case; an email confirmation could be useful.

Actually for MasterCard, the cardholder saying they didn't authorise the DCC is enough for a successful chargeback.

Do you have a bill from the hotel?
If they were charged a surcharge or converting the currency themselves then this should be on your paperwork and you should have been aware of what you were paying at the time.
...
If you don't know, then I'm afraid you need to pay more attention.
...
so you need to be very clear on what you are paying before you sign on the dotted line.

Until two weeks ago I would have agreed with you as I had always been offered the choice before signing.

This was not the case in a hotel in Madrid I just stayed at. The bill was produced in Euros. I was handed the chip'n'pin machine expecting to see a DCC option, but no. Just the correct amount in Euros. Good, I thought. I typed in the PIN and it said PIN OK/Authorised and to hand the machine back to the merchant. He put it on the desk and the next screen displayed "charge in Euros" / "charge in GBP". Before I had a chance to say anything, he pressed "charge in Euros" so no harm done. I was given the receipt which showed the correct amount in Euros. Nothing to sign.

Had he pressed GBP, I would have protested and if to no avail would have disputed the transaction.

That's interesting; so far, I have always found the EUR/GBP option to be before the input of the PIN. I'll keep an eye open for that one.

I have not checked my clarity statement. But I just check my Metrobank (mastercard) as well as Santander Zero (Visa Debit) online as soon as the transaction appears online (normally after a few days) even before monthly statement was issued I could easily see the rate I was getting and all charges involved it looks like this

Example for Metro Master Card
xx MAY 15 the name/location of cash machine xxx EUR 50@1.391594768 ATM Cash Withdrawal

Example for Santander Zero Visa Debiit
01/06/2015 CARD PAYMENT TO RYANAIR HQWQ4U0, 50.99
EUR, RATE 0.71/GBP ON 24052015

As it is also using the same procession system e.g. MasterCard to process the transaction It might also be clarity card as well, someone else might want to checkt it ….

That's only when the final statement comes at the month end. Until then, the online list of transactions only shows the first line and I suspect that's also all the Halifax staff could see at that point, or they would have told him the actual rate used.

No doubt. But we are talking about the Halifax Clarity card here and I have explained (twice) that all you see online before the monthly statement is issued is: Date, Merchant, GBP Amount. That's it.

I can confirm what Biggles says above, it is very annoying that Halifax does not show the Euro amount on-line as Biggles says just the GBP amount not even the rate used to convert, I think Halifax really need to take a look at this, after all it is a favourite for using overseas....
