  • Churchmouse -- if you do make him a barbie cake we want pics!!
  • I made my DD (several years ago) a Princess cake, in just this way. Sponge cake in a mixing bowl, then top of a dolly stuck in. I found some sugar flowers in the cake shop to decorate the dress.

4 is a great age for a castle cake - I made on for my DD when she was 4. I made 4 turrets from ice cream cones onto a square cake, then iced the lot.

I'm with Churchmouse - these cakes are too small to feed the hoardes at a party, and fiddly to cut and distribute. I make a big chocolate cake, decoarted with Smarties, and cut and wrap it in advance, to go into party bags. The main cake is then taken home for us to admire some more before we eat it.

Thanks everyone for your wonderful ideas. Next quesion? I'm not brave enough to make two sponges and then carve a dress bottom from that-my luck it would probably crumble : (. Where do I get a pudding bowl from so that I can make the rounded shape? Do you stick the entire barbie through the middle? or do you remove the legs and put the waist up on the doll? Next thing does anyone have an idiot-proof recipe I could use?

    Thanks so much! x

  • My pudding bowl came from a homewares shop in York. You don't say where you are, but someone near you might be able to direct you.

I took the legs off the doll, and stuck the top bit into the cake. Abit wobbly, but DD was impressed.

Sponge recipe - equal weights of soft margarine, caster sugar, eggs and SR flour. Whisk for 2 mins, cook at gas 5 (I'd cover it losely with foil after about 20 mins to stop the top burning.

I made a castle, before I even knew about old style. I'm not sure where I got where I got the know how to put it together but it was based on a jane asher.
I made 2 deep square cakes, cut away slightly at the corners with 4 swiss rolls stood on end with an unside down ice cream cone on top of each of those for the turrets. It was all covered in pink royal icing, and made 4 small flags with cocktails sticks to stick in the top of the turrets. Once the icing was over everything it looked amazing and everyone was impressed.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.
