Upgrading with Three to iPhone 6...Best Haggles??

Options
Hi all

I'm am overdue an upgrade with Three (was eligible Sept 2014).

I currently have iPhone 4s (34gb) and the One Plan (which no longer exists), including:
All You Can Eat (AYCE) Data,
2000 Mins,
5000 Three-to-Three Mins,
5000 texts
for £35 per month

I'd like to upgrade to iPhone 6 64gb, and the most important criteria is keeping the AYCE Data. But I've done my research, and the best deal I can get for that with Three is:
AYCE Data
600 Mins
AYCE Texts
for £49 per month PLUS £99 upfront cost.

So I have to pay £14 per month more than I am now, and I will be reducing my inclusive mins by 1400mins per month (plus lose my 5000 Three-to-Three mins too I believe).

So I plan on doing the MSE advised retentions haggle to see if I can get better.

Just wondering what sort of deals others have achieved through haggling with Three?? (even better if it was for an iPhone 6 also)

Three don't appear to be haggling whatsoever at present, it seems they had a decree from their head office to stop discounting. It's almost always the deal offered or a PAC, if you take the PAC they don't even bother to follow up with further offers by a retentions call as happened in the past.

3 aren't known for offering great retention deals. And it's almost impossible to get a better than standard website / shop price on an IP6 contract. Think about it, why would they have to/ The phones are already flying off the shelves already...... they hardly have to bribe people to take them.

Why not go sim only or PAYG and buy a ip6 handset outright? it almost always works out cheaper over the duration of the would be contract. AND you get an unlocked handset, and you're not stuck in a 24 month contract.

I just came on here to post almost the exact same thread, NurseMoneySaver1122.

I do not want to lost the One Plan - and as Three have discontinued it, any upgrade will involve going onto a different tariff. I do not want to leave Three, as I love the AYCE date and 'free' usage in USA, France, Sweden, etc.

Like 19lottie82 said, I'm starting to think that buying a phone outright and going on a Sim Only contract at £17 a month works out cheaper in the long run?
...and the Spurs go marching on.
  • Yeah looking like that may be the only way then Matthius23! I can't do the £17 a month sim only, 200 mins is just too low for me.

I think I could manage with 600mins. I did the maths to compare buying outright over monthly contract for the 600 mins sim only plans; obviously I've had to compare over a 24 month period:

    SIM ONLY PLANS

    a) AYCE data 600 mins £22pm (12 months contract)
    £1147 over 24mth (inc. £619 for 64gb iPhone 6)

    b) AYCE data 600 mins £25pm (1 month contract)
    £1216 over 24 mth (inc. £619 for 64gb iPhone 6)

    Compare that to:

    24 MONTH (comparable) CONTRACT:

    a) AYCE data 600 mins £49pm
£1275 over 24 months (inc. £99 upfront cost)

    b) AYCE data 600 mins £52pm
£1297 over 24 month (inc. £49 upfront cost)

The difference was less significant than I thought it would be...I may have been too hopeful there though!

Anyway, I thought I'd share my comparisons

Three may force your hand and move you off the one plan shortly after you pass the minimum term anyway....

Upgrade or not you will be losing your one plan tariff some time soon. Three are removing it from existing customers, if you don't agree to a new tariff you will be given your PAC.

Thanks gjchester and d123, I was aware that was coming soon. haven't heard anything from them yet but I know it's just a matter of time.

The issue isn't really about losing the one plan (although I love the plan), it's finding the right plan with the iphone 6.

    But thanks anyway :)

Wow, was not aware of this - thanks for the heads up, all!

I've been out of contract/rolling since October, so I reckon I may be hearing from them soon.

I upgraded to the 64GB iPhone 6 on Three from a sim only 30 day notice contract, I managed to haggle the up front cost to £0 but am paying £51 having done that. Over the 24 month contract term its still a smaller saving.

I am on the 600 mins with unlimited data and unlimited texts, I am also getting 2000 3 to 3 minutes per month included in the £51.

Unlike the one plan, tethering (if thats important to you) is limited to 2GB per month and no longer unlimited.

I did this in store with a rep rather than online or on the phone to customer services.
