I'd suggest £5,000 because car companies are in this to make money. You really think they'd offer an option that triples or quadruples the range of your car, for only a tiny increase in price?

The premium BMW charged for the I3 range extender was about £3000.

Aha! News at least, if a bit dated in places.

So the difference is £8500 or £340 for each additional kWh ... but how much of that is due to the awd & higher specification?

Pedantic I know but slightly higher than that because it takes you into the luxury car tax bracket, so no 0 road tax for most uk buyers...

Car companies are in a competitive market not only are they competing with other cars they are competing with the huge stock of existing cars

    From the Tesla UK website:

Standard range plus, 50kWh, rwd: £38,500

Long range, 75kWh, premium interior, awd: £47,000

So the difference is £8500 or £340 for each additional kWh ... but how much of that is due to the awd & higher specification?

FYI, BMW would charge £3500 - £4000 for the awd & higher spec on a 4 series GC. That would make it a maximum of £200/kWh for the extra range.

    I'm not fully convinced

By comparison a powerwall costs £6,350 from Tesla and is 14KWh which equals £453/KWh

But anyway even at £200/KWh to go from a 20KWh hybrid to a 80KWh long range is still a significant £12,000 for the battery pack

Interestingly the Hyundai ioniq is available in all flavours

    Normal hybrid £20,940
    Plug in hybrid £26,605
Pure Electric £30,850 (£3,500 off with government grant)

So there is a +£9,910 difference in going from a hybrid to a pure electric !! And it's only 180 mile range
I guess batteries are dammed expensive by comparison you can buy a full petrol car for less than that price difference!! Hyundai i10 £7,825. Cheaper to make a whole brand new petrol car than it is to just make the Batteries for a BEV... crazy

Also for comparison two of the UK best selling cars
    Ford focus £16,841
    Ford fiesta £14,068

I guess what this shows is despite the claim BEVs are now more competitive than ICE cars it's just not true. +£10k to go from a high mileage hybrid to a pure BEV with just 180 mile range. You might as well save your £10,000 You're not going to break even for at least 100,000 miles !!! Plus the petrol pays for UK schools and doctors while the BEV £10k premium just goes to Korea
  • Isn't there an actual electric car thread on this forum for posting things EV rated?

    Hi

... Vocally own the present through volume & frequency, rewrite the past through repetition & deflection, control the future through smoke & mirrors ... pretty standard approach really, just that so many don't seem to recognise the pattern!
