That us exactly what we have done this year, we are going to Butlins Skegness for the 2 peak weeks in August, we have booked with a private owner and basically we are going to be staying in a brand new caravan for 2015 for 2 weeks including passes to be able to use all Butlins facilities and it has cost us less than it would have done to book 1 week for bog standard chalet direct from Butlins!!
Billy Butlins Mantra of 1 weeks holiday for 1 weeks wages has definetly gone out of the window!!Take every day as it comes!!0 -

However as there are only two of us and I will have to pay the same price to accommodate 6 in a caravan it might be more expensive but its certainly worth looking at.

just thought I would update for others who might come across this thread
I looked at caravans and for two people it worked out more expensive, however for a family of 4 or more it seems really good valve. It was for the same reason I couldn't afford an apartment on site as I would be paying for 4 people.
We stayed in a room only (twin) silver as it was only £5 extra than standard. I was lucky enough to find a travel fridge for £5 in a charity shop before we went, so I took this with us.
As I had the child eats free offer I upgraded to premium dinning so my comments are based on that (I would definitely want to go premium again).
The room size was adequate, the fridge fitted (just) on the table with the kettle and we stored suitcase etc under the beds. All our clothes fitted on the shelves in the wardrobe (however I did pack very light). I used the cupboard under the desk to put the food/drinks in we took.
I really liked the dinning it worked out ideal for us, so much so that I would want to do that every time we go now. With a fussy child like mine it was ideal, he could eat whatever he wanted in combinations you would never get in a restaurant or even what I would bother cooking at home, for example one night he had 4 yorkshire puddings, fish fingers, roast potato and chips. It was also ideal as he doesn't like restaurants he won't sit still and wait whilst food is being ordered/cooked we didn't have this as everything was out and ready. It was the first time I had ever been away with ds that wasn't self catering and I must admit I felt spoil not having the hassle to think about what to cook/where to eat/cooking etc. It made the break more enjoyable for me.
I took a loaf of bread and cheese (kept in the mini fridge) for cheese sandwiches at dinnertime along with crisps, biscuits etc. I also kept milk for my cups of tea in the fridge although the food hall had milk in those small containers that don't need refrigeration so this was not necessary as I have could have put a couple extra in my bag at breakfast.
The only issue was the noise of the fridge at night I had to turn if off and just have it running during the day, also there were only two sockets so I had to keep swapping the fridge plug when I wanted to boil the kettle (the tv was plugged into the other).0
