http://64.233.183.104
at the same time
does it lose the connection and browse ability in the same way?

If Albertross's great help can't solve your problem, you might want to try the Virginmedia usenet support groups...it's free and you get a quick answer. They can check your connection from their end, which the terrible phone support in India can't do.
They'll want to see the same pings and traceroutes...and also your cable modem power signal levels which you can get from here :

If it's diagnosed to be a fault on the Virgin side and not your PC, you can then reclaim the phone call costs from Customer Services on 150.

Lasted 7 mins this time then rebooted.
Pinging was fine to google, but couldn't get the url ip to work as I think my 7 mins were just up, but like I said it kept on pinging happily even though it wasn't letting me view web pages.
Modem is motorola surfboard SB5100 cable modem - age erm ancient as I've had it for a few years now.
As for timing yes it's dropping about the same time. Around the 5 to 7 mins usually nearer the 5 I'd say.
When I'm losing connection or rather web pages all lights on my modem are stable suggesting there is a working line there and after a reboot they work fine again, for the length of time as above.0 -
clutching at straws, but do you have zonealarm on the other PC's that you have tried?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
-
Yes I have zone alarm installed on the pc's but I had uninstalled it, it used to work fine with zone alarm installed. Never had a problem like this before with zone alarm.
Both this pc and the other are running windows xp and the windows firewalls are disabled.
I'll go and check the control panel again and make sure it's uninstalled.0 -
probably not a good idea to run without any firewalls enabled at all, I'd turn XP firewall on if you don't have a router.
ZA has an internet lock function, which is what I was getting at, but It should stop pings as well if that was kicking in.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

Just double checked and zone alarm was still partially installed going by add / remove programs but I've uninstalled it and *sigh* rebooted again using it's own uninstall software and the windows firewall has auto enabled after reboot.
Thank you so much for your time helping me - it's really appreciated if not still a mystery.
EditYip it's not showing in add / remove programs now so finally uninstalled. Now to wait for my 7 mins.
Edit connected for 12 mins so far! Fingers crossed. You may fingers crossed have sussed it out! Either that or they have finally taken my complaint seriously and sorted it at their end.0 -
Does the modem have any logs?
my fingers are crossed, and legs.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Not sure if this is relevant to your problem but anything is worth a try! This page talks about the use of transparent web proxy caches and how to sidestep the transparent web caches. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Erm where would I find the log file (and still connected) not had to reboot for 20 mins now.
Oh fingers crossed this is it. Mind you still not connected back to my linksys router mainly as I can't remember which way the cables go. Trial and error me thinks.
Once again a huge thank you.
Even my outlook express is running much faster now. I still think the problem was at their end and it's finally cleared. Although I was running zone alarm, why would it block some pages for a certain amount of time and as you said let ping requests out and in?
Zone alarm has run successfully on my pc for years with no problems. Now do I reinstall it or what?0
