Blueyonder / Virgin Dundee no web pages after 5 mins.

To cut a long story short problems for over a week - can connect to internet for 5 mins tops getting web pages.

All lights on modem stable.

After 5 mins lose web pages and need to reboot pc and modem to get it connected for 5 mins again using both firefox and IE.

Lost count of amount of folks I’ve spoken to in India who all say it's problem with pc.

Firewall disabled (zone alarm and windows), running avast antivirus. Have done a full virus scan and adaware scan, both clean and when I’m connected for the brief period anti virus scan is updating.

Can download emails via outlook express, only text emails though, and anything with web content fails to download after the 3-5 mins cut off.

When you get English call centre to phone back it's a routing issue at their end and they are aware of it.

India continually say it's my pc! Despite saying I've tried 2 pc's and laptop and saying same problem!!! They have tried all the trouble shooting and there is nowt more they can do – yes there is but these words are not for this forum!

Lost count of how often I’ve unplugged modem and shut down pc, plugged modem in, restarted pc. Again connection works for 5 mins if that, no longer then no web pages again.

Tracert times out after 7th hop, ok for next 4 then times out from 11 / 12th to 30th hop. But that’s not a problem according to India!! Problem according to English folks who understand the language and a computer!!!!! This is an improvement as it used to timeout after 4th hop then 7th hop then 11th onwards.

Pinging https://www.bbc.co.uk same thing when pc rebooted, get reply, but after 5 mins all packets lost but send ok.

I think it’s a DNS issue, but when asking for a set of DNS server addresses, to put into my TCP/IP properties they had no idea what I was speaking about and conveniently ignored me (obviously I was digressing yet again from their CRAP script!!!)

At 25p a min trying to convince someone there is a problem it’s costing me a fortune and I can’t even get a complaint logged. One was supposed to have been logged Thursday but when phoning today there is funnily enough no record of it. I’ve rarely had a problem with my blueyonder service when it was blueyonder, but since virgin media took over and the Indian (please don’t be offended if you are an India and local as at least you will understand the language here and the different coloqualisms) call centres the customer service has gone downhill dramatically. There is no consistency between the call centres and the “help you get”.

On the rare occaision before the 25p a minute call centre took over, I phoned everything was resoved very quickly but now a week later and I’m still not online properly. I was using a freephone number to call from saynoto0870.com for the first few calls, now it’s asking for a pin number to use it and I can’t get through to the helpdesk any other way other than the 25p a minute call centre.

Help please – any suggestions to help me get online or even directly through to their Liverpool call centre where there is no language barrier and they know about pc’s? Or what the pin is to use the freephone number?

Thanks in advance, rant over!

PS Anyone else on virgin having same problem?

Try using OpenDNS as an alternative. You will find all the information that you need on their site, regarding set-up and use etc.

Put the dns servers into TCP/IP as instructed and again no web pages after 5 mins.

Just done another reboot, hence me being online just now.

Don't hold out much hope though.

Thanks for replying though as I'm wiling to try anything other than the Indian call centre again.

Any other suggestions feel free to erm eh - suggest?

    start, run, cmd

put ipconfig commands in black box

    also

    ping -t 208.67.222.222

    ping -t 208.67.220.220

will ping the opendns servers, to show connectivity.

leave it running for 10 mins. Control and C to stop

    Dropped again

    ipconfig returns:--

    Ip addy as before
    Subnet mask 255.255.248.0
    Default gateway 82.41.112.1

Currently pining 1st set of servers - don't know if it will last for 10 mins without me having to reboot.

Thank you so much for this. It's driving me nuts.

It's still successfully pinging the first set of dns servers. Do you want me to cancel it, reboot and then ping the above address?

Edit I'm using firefox as my main browser, will this make any difference as I've the same problem in I.E. anyway with no pages.

Just had to reboot again after losing web pages.

Pinging for first set of servers

pinged 638, received same, min 14ms, max 54, average 17

pinging the default gateway just now and it's returning fine

As to whether I'm in Scotland, yes, I'm up in Dundee and there was an outage here which the English call centre acknowledges, but the Indian call centre doesn't even have a record of.

Edit google pinged fine. Give me 10 mins and I know it won't.

Edit again, both firefox and I.E. work for 10 mins after reboot of pc and / or modem then web pages disappear.

Page can't be displayed in Explorer and just the word Done at the bottom right in firefox.

Yip dropped again after 7 mins. No web pages.

Pinging the 82.41.112.1 carried on successfully though even after web pages were lost.
