Last year, our boiler finally broke down. It had been causing us some issues for some time. We called a plumber and that already meant waiting a few days. Then he said that he could repair it, but it really was on its last leg and would only break down again after some time. We knew this and that it was time to finally replaced it. It also involved changing some pipes.
From the moment we called to the moment we finally got a new boiler, it was over 2 weeks. Did we moan and complained that this was unacceptable? No because we are the owner of the property and there was nothing else we could do. We had to accept that this was the quickest it could be fitted.
I am amazed reading some post on this forum with tenants expecting service beyond what a paying home owner can get themselves! What would you have done if it had been your boiler? Pay to stay in a hotel for 1 week? Keep on paying pointless repairs to avoid a few days of disruption? Just curious!
Some tenants seem to think they are renting hotels, with the associated service of being waited on hand and foot, rather than a house. I'm not saying that's the issue here, but in my experience, that can be the case.

Having to pay for repairs when inevitably, they will have to then pay for changing the boiler is going to be much more expensive. What are they supposed to do? Pay the repairs for only 3 weeks and then pay for replacing the boiler and then re-rent it, in essence making the repairs a waste of cost, or are they supposed to wait until it breaks down again? What happens if it is then 2 weeks before the next tenants wants to go?
The fact that OP's son is chosing to leave in three weeks time to go and live somewhere else is not the LL's fault.0 -

I don't think you were. It's an awkward situation and he was told the boiler would be fixed, then it's been postponed a couple of times and now there's going to be a load of disruption.Maybe people are waiting for this.....

Some members of this forum can be a bit unkind - I've been called all sorts of names for things I've posted in the past. Some of them are landlords themselves so get really defensive of other landlords. Some also like to analyse everything in great detail (i.e. questioning why his course isn't finished, or why if he's not feeling great he hasn't gone home).
Sorry for replying, I'm sure you'd rather it dropped off the page so you didn't have to keep defending yourself but I wanted to add something a little more positive. Hope he's better soon

Annie, I am pleased this is sorted but I do think for future reference that sometimes it is useful to include more inform rather than less.
There is plenty of information from your back posts about the course your son is on and other health issues so it is not a secret. Maybe just including the facts would have been more useful.
I am pleased he has new accommodation and things are improving.0
