I had a similar problem with a Mercedes sprinter once, once the head had snapped off the bolt the pulley slid off over the bolt leaving enough of the bolt sticking out of the end of the crank.
I grinded it smooth cut a thread into the bit sticking out put a nut on it and welded it up. The new hex head and the heat of the welding had the desired effect and it came out. Once out I noticed the reason for the snapping if was slightly too long or the wrong washer was used and had bottomed out.

I understand room will be a problem on a transverse engine.

One thing I am having a problem understanding is if this was a cambelt engine how did the bolt fall into the engine? Never seen a cambelt in an lubrication circuit!

PS; What I have seen before is the head knacked because someone had used a cheap, or incorrect socket. Then someone takes all sorts of weapons to it trying to free it.

It would have just fallen into the sump easyish to sort out.
Laughable! Another armchair mechanic with absolutely no idea!

For your education, the crankshaft is solid, it is surrounded by an oil seal, the block and sump pan. There is no-way anything could fall into the sump. The OP just didn't expplain properly in the first post that a piece of the bolt was left in the crankshaft.
