Marriage Allowance

  • Hi,
I am just in the process of doing the husband's SA tax return. I transferred my marriage allowance to him when we could first register for it and have had confirmation that it has been done etc. But on the SA tax return form online there is nowhere to tick or claim the amount? Can anyone help out? Has anyone submitted the 15/16 return and noted the allowance somehow? If so, how have you done it? or have they just automatically applied it to the calculation themselves? I am a bit nervous about sending it off when it doesn't show on the 'view your calculation' bit.

    Thanks!

Hi I wonder if anyone can advise me or tell me if this is correct.

I have today requested my marriage allowance refund from the tax office for the last financial year. The person I spoke to confirmed this amount would be refunded by cheque.

However when I asked if this years refund she stated this could only be refunded through your tax code.

Is this correct as I was hoping to have the full refund of about £400 by cheque as states in MSE email. If she is wrong what should I do now?

She was adamant that the money would only be refunded through tax code adjustment and quite dismissive of the MSE advice !!!!!!!

That's what I believed too, I have to say I'm very confused, I thought we could ask for a cheque for the lump sum by telephone but not online, very confused and wondering if I now have to eat humble pie to HMRC. I could have sworn on MSE testimonials people were getting cheques for £432, am I wrong?

I must confess I don't know for certain but I would say that the 2015/16 allowance (£212) would be paid by cheque but the 2016/17 allowance (£220) would be paid through a change of tax code.

Nowhere on MSE has anyone stated you would get this year's allowance in cash up front. It works the same as anything else - prior years will be paid either in cash or coded into the next year and current year will be coded against earned income. If you had no earned income this year you would not be entitled to any refund - now do you see why they do not pay it up front.
Your normal tax allowance for this year is £11000, they do not send you a cheque for £2200 on the off chance you will earn enough to pay that amount in tax.

I got a rebate through PAYE in my March salary for £212

That should be £220 (typo). :)

This discussion is about those who didn't claim in time for the allowance to be applied in the 2015/16 tax year. New applicants for the allowance in the 2016/17 tax year will get a total of £432 but it's not clear how HMRC pays the allowances for both years during the 2016/17 tax year.

Future claimants, for the next four years, will be able.to claim the allowance backdated to 2015/16 but will HMRC lump the change of tax code into a single year (unlikely, in my view) or will they pay backdated years as a cheque and the current year as a change of tax code - this seems the most likely to me.

No, £2200 is 20% of £11000. Expecting to get this years marriage (tax) allowance up front as a cheque is the same as expecting to get this years normal tax allowance up front as a cheque.

But the allowance is only 10% of £11,000 i.e. £1,100 and the maximum rebate will therefore be 20% of £1,1000 = £220.
