    IGNORE THIS !!
Have now been reliably advised that the HMRC document is "technically wrong" apparently it is not uncommon for these documents from the Staff Manuals to have errors !!!

I dont think it has been mentioned that the income limit quoted does NOT include all savings interest.

Quote from HMRC document PAYE100060.htm for 2015/6 tax year:

"your annual income is £10,600 or less, plus up to £5000 of tax-free savings interest"
So if savings interest pushes your income above £10600 (£11000 for 2016/7 tax year) you may still be eligible.

Likely to be of most interest to those retired with significant savings.
  • Hi, this my be a stupid question, but I've transferred my allowance for last year to my husband and just waiting for the cheque.
Why is it we'll get a cheque for £200 instead of what was transferred over I.e £1060???
Sorry if it's a silly question

No question about Tax is ever "silly"

You transferred £1060 of your allowance, this means that £1060 of your husbands income is no longer taxed at 20% . This equals a saving or refund of 20% of £1060 = £212
  • Hi I wonder if anyone can advise me or tell me if this is correct.

I have today requested my marriage allowance refund from the tax office for the last financial year. The person I spoke to confirmed this amount would be refunded by cheque.

However when I asked if this years refund she stated this could only be refunded through your tax code.

Is this correct as I was hoping to have the full refund of about £400 by cheque as states in MSE email. If she is wrong what should I do now?

She was adamant that the money would only be refunded through tax code adjustment and quite dismissive of the MSE advice !!!!!!!

Nowhere on MSE has anyone stated you would get this year's allowance in cash up front. It works the same as anything else - prior years will be paid either in cash or coded into the next year and current year will be coded against earned income. If you had no earned income this year you would not be entitled to any refund - now do you see why they do not pay it up front.

    Hi,

Hoping someone can help. My husband and I applied online on 7th March and received a confirmation email from HMRC but I've just had my payslip for April (I get paid 15th of each month) and it's the standard 1100L tax code. When will my tax code be amended to reflect me having the total of my husbands allowance and does anyone know how much a month this is likely to be? thanks in advance! :)

It was probably your employer who couldn't implement the change of tax code in time for the final pay day. You should get a cheque from HMRC for the £212 (2015/16) if you apply for a refund or they may adjust next year's tax code.

MA for 2016/17 is worth £220 for the year or about £18.33 per month.

Okay thanks. So when will my tax code change? Next payslip (May) or do I have to wait until next year now? sorry, I'm very confused!

It should apply from the April payday (assuming it's after the 5th monthly). You should have received a notice of coding from HMRC; your employer will be notified at around the same time as you are.

If you haven't yet received anything from HMRC then they may apply the allowance from both years to the 2016/17 tax year.

Very prompt service this year from HMRC following up on my computerised submission. I got my Self Assessment Statement in the post today dated 08 April 2016 with the Marriage Allowance correctly applied. I also note a quick response to my previous telephone call. HMRC is greatly improved.
