Marriage Allowance

  • I transferred my tax allowance to my husband in March after reading all of the advice on MSE and the forums. After hearing that people were receiving their backdated allowances, I was looking forward to some extra pennies in the new financial year.

However, my husband is paid weekly and therefore would not get a refund of tax in his pay packet, as the (approx) £212 for the year was in excess of the weekly tax he would pay. I thought, not to worry, we'll probably get a cheque, but nothing. I rang up HMRC today (for a separate query) and asked them if we were eligible for the backdated rebate. They said that we would receive it around June or July when everyone's tax accounts were reconciled.

Not ecstatic, but what can I do? Just thought I would give people here a heads up in case they were waiting for their backdated payments.

You are wrong about not being able to get the refund via his wages. If he had paid enough tax in previous weeks then the employer could have made the refund. He would have paid no tax for a week and got a refund on top of that included in his wages. That assumes the employer got a tax code to use in March.

If you applied very late in the tax year though it may have been too late for tax people to send the employer the code so you will now have to get the money back from tax office. Instead of waiting till the summer why not get hubby to send his P60 to the tax office as proof he didn't get then refund and ask them to issue the repayment?

Has hubby had a new tax code for the new tax year so at least he's getting this years money each week?

  • I have just tried to do my tax return too. My wife transferred 10% of her allowance to me but as matters stand there is no way to get that into the tax return; it only allows the basic £10,600 with no way to update it. I called the tax office who knew of the issue but had no suggestions as to how it will be corrected! They thought about the allowance as there IS a section which allows mt to transfer MY 10% to my wife!!!! How incompetent.

Where BOTH the RECIPIENT and the TRANSFEROR are in SA, the RECIPIENT will receive a credit of £212 on their SA statement once the TRANSFEROR has submitted their tax return with the correctly completed Marriage Allowance section completed.

Where the TRANSFEROR is in SA but the RECIPIENT is not, the relief will be given by way of an additional allowance in the tax code.

Where the RECIPIENT is in SA but the TRANSFEROR is not, a credit of £212 will be introduced onto the Recipients SA statement once the tax return is completed assuming a claim for Marriage Allowance has been made already.

Where neither is in SA the claim is dealt with by way of tax code adjustments.

In all cases the initial Marriage Allowance claim must have been made outside of SA. You CAN NOT make a first time/initial Marriage Allowance claim directly on the SA return, you must complete the process either online or over the phone to set up the link between the 2 taxpayers otherwise the record won't be linked and no credits/code changes will take place.

I have just completed my SA tax return, and the Marriage Allowance did not show up, so I added a comment in the "additional Information", asking for the the £212 to be added to the tax rebate I am expecting, and asking them to let me know how it will eventually be paid if it is not added to my tax rebate!

For clarification of my situation, my wife, who is not on SA, made the transfer online on March 23, and I received a new Tax Code also dated March 23, adding the £1060 to my 2015-2016 code, and also adding £1100 to my 2016-2017 code.

once the system links your wife's request with your SA record the credit will be added to your statement.

I applied on 2nd March, but you're right, HMRC said that it was too late in the tax year to send out his updated code to his employer. You are also right that they sent us updated codes in the meantime, so he is getting the extra £4 per week in his pay packet for this year. What to do with all that money!? :rotfl:

I would send them hub's P60 but our affairs with the tax office haven't been great lately - they seem to be making a complete hash of everything and taking an age to fix it. I'm likely to just wait it out until the summer rather than putting another fly in the ointment but thanks for the advice, I wasn't aware that we could do that.

(I wasn't in the best mood that day as I had started a new job in March and they'd snaffled nearly a quarter of my monthly wages off me in emergency tax :( But that's another story!)
