  • I have a very similar problem to one mentioned before on the forum, proof of identity.

this was not really answered, with a moderator advising to visit the same web pages on MSE that do not contain any answers.

My wife does not work. She has not worked for several years and claims no benefits from the state, therefore the identity checks shown on the website, such as benefits and P60's etc do not apply.

As she has no income, she has dormant accounts which do not pay out and have not been paid into since she stopped working.

Her passport lapsed long ago, so the only real ID she has is her driving licence.

Does anybody know if the licence will work and how it could be used to prove identity to HMRC?

I think, in these circumstances, your wife should telephone HMRC to discuss what is acceptable as ID. I don't know whether they will be able to check her ID whilst on the telephone but at least she will have registered her request for the transfer of MA before the 5 April deadline.

    Edit
Have look at <HMRC's Proof of identity checklist> and look for Proof of identity checklist for individuals which is about two-thirds down the page. You need to provide two forms of ID: (1) name and (2) address.

    Hope this helps.

MrsM transferred her allowance to me with no proofs whatsoever over the phone. All they wanted was NI number and address. Obviously their system checks these things.

I only applied on 7th March, wondering shall I get the £212 in this months pay? How long does it normally take?

Depends if a tax code has been issued, if your employer has received it, when your employer runs their payroll etc etc.
  • In regards to the Marriage Tax Allowance, how would I go about this because I don't claim any benefits. I am coming up 63 in June this year and I get my State Pension in March 2017 but to be honest how can I claim this marriage tax allowance when I don't have an income. Reason being is because that time I worked was back in March 2005 when I got finished of which I made a claim for benefit at my local Jobcentre (Eston) but I was told that if I wanted to make claim was to claim from my husband. I was totally flabbergasted in what I was told. I have never worked or claimed any benefit since then as no-one has advised me or tried to help me in going forward in which my husband has provided me with financial support. So how can I even try to make a claim even though I don't have an income? Please help?

If your husband is a basic-rate taxpayer then you may transfer the MA to him. You only need proof of name and proof of address as well as both of your NI numbers.

  • Hello.
I applied for marriage tax allowance this month and i have received my £212 relief in my tax payments this month.
However, i earnt £42399 through extra overtime so breached the 40% by £14 as the cut off is £42385.
Can anyone tell me if this means they will take the allowance off me in the coming months or if it will be left.

    Thanks mark

CAll me pedantic, but this is an important point and has already resulted in a deal of confusion and a few false applications...

You meant to say that 'YOUR SPOUSE applied for Marriage tax allowance'

It is in the gift of the applicant to transfer their allowance to another party, so it is the lower paid person who applies, not the intended recipient.
