Hi I need a bit of help. Since Martin put up about the marriage tax refund I applied and now owe the tax office money. For the past year I have been paying extra money and got a letter yesterday to say I haven't paid enough tax and they are now going to take more money off me over the next year.0

It might prompt more responses if you tell people what you're asking for help with.unamcl1 said:Hi I need a bit of help. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride1 -
It sounds like you may have “claimed” to transfer marriage allowance to your spouse / civil partner, but if you wanted to receive marriage allowance then your spouse / civil partner should have “claimed”. As unholyangel said you need to provide more info.unamcl1 said:Hi I need a bit of help. Since Martin put up about the marriage tax refund I applied and now owe the tax office money. I'm a mature university student - self-funding, and accordingly and theoretically I have no income and pay no tax. My partner earns well over the threshold. Does the HMRC rules still apply?0

What do you mean by "theoretically" you have no income? Do you have any income or not? How much does your partner earn? Is he/she liable to tax at 40%?0

What HMRC rules?0

I would think so, I took early retirement and now drawdown from a pension pot.Humblesheep said:I'm a mature university student - self-funding, and accordingly and theoretically I have no income and pay no tax. My partner earns well over the threshold. Does the HMRC rules still apply?
I gave part of my tax allowance, £1250 to my wife and make sure i draw no more than £11250 from my pension pot so I no longer pay tax.
My wife is also taking early retirement this year, I'll continue to give her part of my allowance meaning she'll only be paying tax on £500.
We can manage quite easily on £25000 per year so all good.0 -
Hi
Will applying for the marriage allowance have any impact on the amount of child tax credits we receive ? We have been married since August 16. We will have to declare any back payment in our annual renew next year ? I have been a stay at home Mum since January 2014 . So therefore I’ve had no income since then and DH works full time .
Thanks0 -
