Hi, my wife and I applied for marriage tax allowance, we have received an email saying we will receive a new tax code and I will receive a cheque for the previous years, we received a letter with new tax codes about a month ago but have heard nothing about the back dated cheque, any idea how long this normally takes, I understand the delay may be due to covid19 but the latter etc came through without any delay? Thanks for any advice

    Try webchat https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/income-tax-enquiries-for-individuals-pensioners-and-employees#marriage-allowance
otherwise, can you not ignore the message about claiming online and hang on to speak to an adviser?
Try calling as soon as they open at 8am or a few minutes  before then, when the lines will not be so bus.
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I have very limited access to a computer during the day and so far when I have had the opportunity there have not been any web chat advisers available. On the telephone system (currently operating 9-4) there is no option to be put on hold to speak to an agent, just a message "we cannot help at the present time" or words to that effect then get cut off.

Phones times are given  as 8am -4pm. Monday to Friday.
Phoning a few minutes before the official opening time often gets an answer.
If you cannot wait until things improve you could write to make your claim.

Looking for a bit of advice my mother recently found out about the Marraige Allowance.  She thought that she was doing things through the HMRC but it turns out she had registered through some company at www.marriageallowancebenefit.org.uk and now that her cheque has come through they have walloped her for around £350 in fees from the ammount she was due.

Understandly she is quite upset about it but I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to do anything about it now given that she thought she was doing it through the HMRC.

Unless she failed to sign the deed of assignment (which is most unlikely) there is nothing more she can do. If she also signed a form 64-8 (new) appointing these people as her agent, she should cancel the appointment.

    Nothing, as already explained.

Clues for others looking at this site:
    No Win
    No Fee!
so when you win, you pay a fee.

An HMRC officer will review your application

    would HMRC say this?

MarriageAllowanceBenefit.org.uk is operated by Data Labs Global Ltd ("We"). We are registered in England and Wales under company number 11137754. Our registered office is at 591 London Road, Cheam, Sutton, United Kingdom, SM3 9AG. Authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (No. 838834).

    Finally there is :

    Who can apply

They've got this wrong - but then so has HMRC. Same goes for poor spelling / proof reading.

Contact HMRC  and make sure there is no ongoing authorisation for ant future repayment to go to them.
  • Hi, I have just received a cheque for my backdated tax refund for a marriage allowance claim. However a massive  chunk has been taken for "administration and processing" (about 40%) . After a bit of research I now realised I have been "had" . and unwittingly claimed via a claims company who appear to bepart of  HMRC. Unlike PPI companies there was no correspondance outlining  a fee would be taken. If I had realised I would not have proceeded as I didn't need the help of a company like this. In view of this do I have any comeback? Can anyone help?

These third party have no connection to HMRC.
Look back the thread and you will find   many posters like yourself who have unwittingly signed up to one.
Either you previously used them for  previous repayment claim and signed a mandate authorising repayments to go to them  and that authorisation is still in place. So all subsequent  repayments go to them.Or,  you applied for the marriage allowance through their website and not direct to HMRC.
To claim direct you  claim online.
If it was a  claim form then that is from the the third party who take a cut for administering the claim.
Like the poster above you ned to contact HMRC to find out how to cancel the authority.
