Did you ever allow anyone to act as your agent? PPI claims? Mis-selling claims?

That's the way most folk have lost out on a claim for MAT.

HMRC should be able to tell you if you have an agent.

Looks like user "ajpr" has realised their mistake of unintentionally using a third party , but rather than admitting they were misled and it wasnt a conspiracy by HMRC, has cancelled their user here.
  • I applied for marriage tax allowance on HMRC website. Couldn't complete as didn't have all the relavent details for my wife. My wife said she would do it later when she had time. Later she did a search online for marriage tax allowance and had forms sent through the post. I didn't realise she hadn't gone through the HMRC site. She filled out the forms when they arrived and posted them off. Some time later I received details from HMRC stating they had sent a chequestion to Marriage Allowance Ltd. We have since heard nothing after nearly two months. There is no contact number and only an address with a PO Box number. Contacted HMRC, but they said they couldn't help me. Think we've been conned!
  • Same thing has happened to us. See my thread.
  • Your post is somewhat confusing.

Initially you were applying. Then your wife applied???

Anyone who applies for Marriage Allowance will either pay the same amount of tax or more. They can never pay less tax.

So who applied and who is expecting the tax reduction?

This the company that the claim was made through.
    FAQ
Why does it say on the form "We assign the payment to Marriage Tax Allowance Limited"?
Your refund will come to us first. We will then deduct our stated fee above and forward a cheque to you.

    Think we've been conned!

Think you've conned yourself, by instructing a third party to claim marriage allowance on your behalf. They take their fee for the service which you asked them to do.

It's free and easy when contacting HMRC direct yourself.
Didn't you tell her to go to www.gov.uk that's the only website you need for everything to do with tax and other government services.

    Hi
Following the advice on Martin's site, we have made a successful claim for a marriage allowance refund. They owed us £320 Happy days!
You might think so but it appears they have made the payment to a third party known as "Marriage Allowance Limited". I have no idea why this would be, as we filled out the online form direct on the official .gov web page as linked in Martins article and have never even heard of them, let alone authorised them to act on my behalf.
I phoned the tax help line to query this but could get no clarity from the advisor and he was unable to transfer me to a supervisor or manager.
Marriage Allowance Limited only have a PO Box number in Market Harborough, with no other contact details so I sent a letter off to them a week or so ago asking for an explanation.
This morning I received a check from them for £165.20 :(
They have charged an administration fee of £134 and I have to pay VAT on that! (£26.83)
So I am asking if anyone has had a similar experience or can shed any light on what has happened or indeed who can I contact to try and resolve this issue.
I feel I have been mugged!
    Thanks for listening!
