This has happened to us too. I have no idea how I have gone through a third party as we applied through the HMRC website. This 3rd party company have taken £300 from our original cheque. I have written to them (conveniently there is no telephone number) asking for proof that they have the right to take our money. Im still awaiting a reply and in the process of writing a second letter. I'm also going to ring Trading Standards to see if they can help. The 'company' (thieving b******ds) are called 'Marriage Allowance Ltd and are based in Leicestershire.

Nope, you thought you applied through the HMRC Website but you didn't. I'm guessing you googled " claim marriage allowance " or similar and clicked on what was an advert probably made up to look like an office place to claim. Plenty of people do the same with passports, ESTA's and other official documents.

Otherwise how do you explain how the "TB's" got your details? HMRC don't just randomly send out some applicants details to random companies.

That's what we did! All done online, I have no proof though! It's so frustrating! I will get to the bottom of it.

Yes we rang HRMC and they said we must have gone through a 3rd party from their website?? I know for a fact that I would not have intentionally ticked for a 3rd party - why would I? HMRC also received £50 from my claim, through this 3rd party so all sounds a bit suspect to me.

Theres your answer almost in your own words, you unintentionally went through a third party website (and not from HMRC which is impossible)

If you know when you applied go back through your browser history. Indeed just search for the url of this company in it. When you find it, if you are happy to fess up to your mistake, please post back.

The only reason these third party websites can exist is by leeching off the careless and confused .so they are good at disguising they are not the official site and that there's an additional cost. It's their bread and butter, it's what they do and they are good at it. You were fooled by professionals. . Accept it.
A good friend of mine got suckered in for an extra passport fee , but she didn't make herself look foolish by insisting she went to the government website and there was a conspiracy by the passport office to defraud her.
So, go look at your browser history and tell me if you went to the fake website or if you went to the fake website.

This is very strange, for three reasons.

1). Applying for Marriage Allowance can only ever mean you pay the same or more tax, it never results in you paying less tax. The recipient, who cannot apply, is the one who gets the tax reduction.

2). HMRC have been moving away from sending cheques for a while now, they prefer to send you a calculation showing any tax overpaid with an invite to go and claim that refund through your Personal Tax Account. You enter your bank details and HMRC then send the refund direct to the account you provided details of.

3). Even if there was going to be a refund due there wouldn't be three cheques. At this time of year possibly two, one for any years to 05:04:2018 and another for 2018:19 when they get round to reviewing the most recent tax year. Anything due for 2019:20 would be received through an increased tax code.

So you haven't gone back to look at your browser history then? :D
They dont advertise something else. If they do, its not the HMRC website.

we applied for marriage allowance in February this year filled out the form thinking it was all genuine. and then we get a letter from HMRC saying they are sending a cheque for 665 pound to marriage allowance limited ? this company is apparently a private company that takes a percentage of the money and then sends us the rest . also there is no way of contacting this company only in writing . we haven't even recieved any money from marriage allowance limited and it's been 5 weeks since HMRC sent the cheque to them . we are stuck and don't know what to do ?
