Probably been asked a million times and I'm sorry for this but I have not ever done a city break before. My parents have just said they are taking the kids away on 29 July for four nights :j so I'm thinking of taking this opurtunity to get away for a break with my partner.
What do you recommend ? Uk or Europe I don't mind, budgets ok but not ridiculous. Thanks in advance.

Hard to know where to start really, there are so many great cities in Europe to choose from.
Much of Europe will be hot or very hot in July; being in an urban environment when it's very hot can be unpleasant - so you might consider a more northern country or a coastal city like Barcelona so you can have some beach time as well as exploring the city.
What sort of things do you want to get out of this city break? Art galleries and museums? Theatre/opera etc? Eating/drinking out? Great architecture? Shopping? As mentioned above, do you want a warm or cool climate?Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -

Thanks Benjus, we are quite easy and go with the flow, if it's there be it a beach, museum or theatre we will try it, as for weather again we are easy ( not hard to please). Im going to try look into Rome as I think that would be a nice mixture of culture, nice restaurants and bars along with history.
I like the sound of Barcelona also, so I will look into that.

I think that Rome could be quite hellish in late July, as could most southern cities. I'd second heading further north.0 -
Yes I was in Rome one June and the heat was unbearable.
I would first look at what cheap flights are available from my local airport and make my decision on that.
I would second Barcelona also Porto (train from airport to city dead easy), Carcassonne, Pisa (good rail links) avoid Paris.0 -
Fly to Verona, hire a car and stay on a camp site next to Lake Garda.
Perhaps.
Ah, that's not really a city break.
Salzburg. Reykjavik.0 -
How about Vienna?0

It was hot in March in Rome, and the one time I was there in mid June, I only lasted 5 hours before going back to the hotel. Too many crowds and intense heat.
July I'd head to Barcelona for the culture, bars and gorgeous beach. Another vote for Salzburg too. It's small, manageable and beautiful with fantastic beer halls.0 -
Where in the UK are you?Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Some great suggestions on here. I'd brave going abroad as even in July weather here might be horrid and then you'd be disappointed. Personally I'd prefer to be too hot and be forced to stop for a cool drink than wet and cold!!
I loved Verona and from there you can easily (public transport) get to Lake Garda or even Venice for the day. Salzburg is delightful as you have all the Mozart history balanced off by the fun of the Sound of Music. Both are small, walkable places.
If you wanted to go further south (and risk the heat) I really liked Seville, Madrid and Lisbon.0
