Speeding Ticket

I received a NIP for speeding on Thursday. I was caught by a speed camera traveling 35 MPH in a 30 MPH zone. I have no points on my license and have never attended a speed awareness course. I have three questions:

1) The NIP was sent to my parents address. I moved out in 2014. I did notify DVLA and my new address is printed on my license, however I cannot remember filling in the V5C. Is this going to open a can of worms?
2) How much does the speed awareness course cost? Do you pay for the course instead of the fine?
3) Do you have to update the address linked to your passport when you move house?

Sorry I can't help with the speed awareness costs - we don't have such thing in Scotland.

But there should be no can of worms at all regards the V5C - as it was an address at which you could still be contacted. It could only have been an issue if it was not your parents and there was a long delay in your replying - or worse still the letter never reached you.

I'd just fill in the change of address bit on the V5C and put on today's date and send it off.

Did you inform your insurance company of your move? If not do that asap too - but I wouldn't try to backdate anything.

Thanks. Yes I did notify the insurance company. There was a £45 admin fee.

Sorry - I forgot to answer your query about change of address re your passport.

It's not necessary - there is no means to inform them of change of address that I know of.

New name, gender, title - that must/can be done - but no-one is interested in your new address.

Check you Vc5, if its in the old address then fair enough, but if it was changed then the NIP was not served correctly and you can get off.

How? If it's served on the registered keeper within 14 days it's served correctly.

Where does it say the address has to be correct? The police could just write a name on it, no address and had deliver it.

    (1) Probably not. The address on your driving licence and/or V5C doesn't necessarily have to be your main home address, so long as it's an address at which you can be contacted. In any event the police are unlikely to be interested in chasing you for it so long as you deal with the speeding ticket.

    (2) The exact cost of the course depends on the area, but it's normally in the region of £100, or slightly lower. It's an alternative to the fixed penalty (3 points and £100).

    (3) there isn't an address associated with your passport, so no you don't have to change it.

Thanks. That is a good point. I read on here that a speed awareness course is an alternative to prosecution. Therefore you do not have to make your insurance company aware. I also read that some insurance companies eg admirell still want to know.

Do you have to inform the insurance company?

It depends on the company. You'll have to read the policy document.

Most insurers do not require this, I believe the Admiral Group is an exception?
The cost of the SAC will be about the same as the fixed point penalty. All you need to do at this stage is admit the offence.
