Even better, i am chef in my sons nursery so I can see him even more since the move included a 10 hour a week drop in hours on a matched (ish) salary..0 -
I was travelling 50 miles each way in 1984-5. My shift partner came 50 miles from the other direction. The home to duty allowance was good though, covered the car payments and all my petrol and servicing costs.0

One commute I did was 20 miles each way, when I started I left home at 8.30 to be in the office for 9am, when I left 15 years later I had to be out the door by 7.30 to have any hope of being in the office on time.
In my last, long term, job my commute involved the M25 and it could take anything from 45 minutes to 4 hours each way.
When I was made redundant 4 years ago I chose to work in the town I live in resulting in a 45% drop in salary. I use my redundancy payment to top me up when needed as only car costs have dropped really. So my commute now is less than 10 minutes and my work/life balance is greatly improved:j Proud Member of Mike's Mob :j0 -
I currently commute just a mile each way which is great particularly as I do a lot of on call as well.
The worst I've done was 60 miles each way which took two and half to three hours each way and that was on top of my normal working day. It was horrible as I had pretty much no free time during the week and didn't really feel like doing anything at the weekend as I felt exhausted. It was worth it at the time though as I was very much needing experience in the role I was in and I knew I wasn't going to be doing the commute longterm. I know many others have similar commutes which they do for years but I don't know how they can tolerate it.

I gave up my job with a long commute last year as it was taking a toll on my health and costing me a fortune.
I'm working locally now - 15 mile round trip and saving a fortune in travel costs and have my life back. The drop in salary for local work doesn't worry me too much as I'm not spending on travel so it works out about even and my health is better now which is more important than the money for me.Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free
Mortgage free since 20140 -
4 miles in a new job - which takes twice as long as my previous commute to travel half the distance.
My previous commute was semi rural with great views - the only thing I miss about my old job!0
