If rental properties get snapped up quickly, then presumably so do houses for sale. I don't really accept that living in rental is any more stressful; the only downside for me was I wasn't allowed to decorate. But if you find the right landlord I can't see it being an issue. The issue seems to be dodgy landlord."The only man who makes money from a gold rush is the one selling the shovels..."0

I don't want to stomp on your achievements but I'd consider living with parents to definitely be receiving family help. It might not be a direct cash lump sum by then but unless you are contributing fully to bills as you would with housemates, you're getting a leg-up on the ladder.
I contributed £800 a month towards rent, bills and food, whereas my rent beforehand was £1,000. I'll reiterate though that this was only for approx 4 months to save those last pennies.0 -

I don't understand the reluctance to admit to having help/support. Isn't that sort of the point of having a loving family? We all help each other out as and when we can, in all sorts of different ways. If you're lucky enough to have that, its not something to hide and be embarrassed about!
I never once said you should be! I could have asked for some financial assistance too but I decided to do it for myself as it was within my own capabilities to do so.
No need to get so defensive about the fact you got a hand out. All I know is that when I got the keys to my place, I will have felt better at about my achievement than you will when you get yours :shhh:0 -

You have no idea how others will feel at some point in the future.
Almost great use of the future perfect, and it sounds like you think yours will be, anyway. Hope you're right.0 -

I'll have to cast my mind back, it was quite a few years ago.
Enjoy your new home, but remember that being overly self congratulatory is never an attractive trait!0 -

+1 (though I would also add "smug" to that).0 -
Whatever way you cut it, it *is* infinitely better to buy anything, whether a home or a TV, without the bank of mum and dad helping out. Personally, I wouldn't dream of asking my parents for money to buy a home, but that doesn't mean I'm judging those that do. I'd sooner go without.
The problems arise when you go around proudly telling people that you didn't rely on others to fund your lifestyle. Apparently that's "smug". One man's smug is another man's jealous. Oh well, life goes on."The only man who makes money from a gold rush is the one selling the shovels..."0 -
I was 25, & bought with my partner. We've been here for 1 year & 3 months. No handouts - just lots of saving. I relocated back to Yorkshire from London to be able to afford to buy - & we now have our 3 bed house for £183,000 which wouldn't have bought a bedsit in London!0

Bought at 26, 9 years ago. Saved half the deposit myself, the other half was from family. Then again, I didn't have any opportunity to live at home after leaving uni at 22.
I've noticed that people do tend to be able to buy family homes considerably easier in the north, and buy them at a younger age. Friends in London often won't buy a property until their 30s.0 -
I bought a 2 bed flat when I was 27, before that I lived with my parents.
I bought it in 2010 for £156,500 with a £47,000 deposit, I didn't have any help I worked 2 jobs for years and saved like mad.
Now that I have a partner and 1 year old son we are saving to move house but Im in the South East so feel I'll be stuck in this flat forever!
House prices in the South East are bonkers
Where do people get all this money from??!0
