Short term benefit advance

Options
Hi all,

I have claimed Universal credit- and my first payment is due on Friday 26th June.

However, I am totally skint and need a short term benefit advance which I will apply for on monday after my interview at job centre.

My only concern is I have a outstanding budgeting loan which i took out when on JSA .I owe around £250 out of the maximum I can borrow of £348 ( I am single with no kids )- will this fact affect getting a short term benefit advance until my first Universal credit payment is due?And if so by how much approx?

I believe I can request a maximum of 50% of my first UC payment- which I will request around £155.

Thanks for any responses.

A worried Kelly.

    According to this:

it may affect the amount you get. Sorry, can't help with the amount.

Be prepared for lots of questions - you have to prove hardship (read all the links)

May effect the amount, pretty much like applying for further budgeting loans do. Did you continue paying your loan off while 'working' ? No idea if that'll make a difference though, I doubt it.

You may need evidence of what you need to pay for, what money you do or don't have, any jet skis sold recently ;)

All you can do is ask on monday

I would also guess that as there are limits on budgeting advances in general, on the amount you can have in total (same amount as budgeting loans) that there's a possibility the maximum you'll be allowed is £98 as you still have the budgeting loans to repay to the DWP.

It may not work that way at all but by rights it should as it's still a debt to the DWP and pretty much the same thing under a different name. So don't be surprised if that happens.

You can always live like a student and stock up on noodles if the worst comes to the worst! Or visit a food bank if needed

For all they know though you could have a full fridge freezer and cupboards,be on quarterly gas and electric etc, which would mean you could eat and have heating, hot water and electricity to cook.

If you're on prepayment meters let them know, for example, and let them know how much is left on the meters etc

Someone is trying to help you - there's no need to show 'attitude'.

Those have been good bits of advice - no one has been having a go at you.

Don't take that attitude to the job centre Londonboy,it won't help.

If you want a loan from them you will need to show reason for getting one. Simple.

I just need the advance for:

    Food ( 4 weeks worth )
    council tax
Transport costs to the job centre ( have to get train/bus )
    Utility bills.

    Thanks for replies in advance.

The outstanding loan is likely to affect the amount you can get on an STBA. Put the application in and let the Decision Makers do the calculation on what you can have. You are likely to be asked what you were doing prior to claiming UC. If you were on another benefit, the amount and date of the last payment will come into the equation too.
