I can cope with it as it is without that fix. ;)

Now it's no longer rooted I imagine the OTA upgrades may work. From the bits I read from the link to xda-developers it seems that it's the root and not the unlocked bootloader that makes them fail - it depends on what the unrooting reset to standard I suppose.

Secondhand Nexus 5s seem to be more attractively priced now than when I last looked and I'm sure you'd still get something for your Nexus 4.

The 5.1.1 went on nice and clean for me but several of the earlier updates all bootlooped and I had to frig around in recovery erasing the cache partition and even full resets to get the thing working again. On more than one it wasn't recognised as 16GB but just 8GB until I factory reset it. Root is nice but it can be a pita and cause some bum twitching when you think you've bricked your phone. Strangely I've only had these issues with the 4.

My problem is that my phone seems to be in an inbetween state ... not rooted but not fully unrooted either. That's why the 5.1.1 OTA update always fails on install. :(

If you have a custom recovery installed then maybe post #2 in that xda thread gives an answer to taking it forward without root. I've always kept stock recovery so I'm not sure what options the others offer but it does seem that flashing a full image is possible and you can get one on your phone using airdroid or similar.

I doubt there will be many more L updates anyway as I've seen reference to M features demos and the 4 is getting a bit long in the tooth now so maybe won't be getting M.

If you can root it then you can use flashify to flash a custom recovery then you should be able to install stock ROM from here.
Did you manage to root it with kingroot?

I haven't tried KingRoot yet ... I need time to read up on it and see what it's about.

I do know I've just downloaded it (KingRoot 4.1) and Avast has thrown up a PUP warning.

Edit: I had to temporarily disable Avast to allow the APK to download properly. I've installed it and it looks like I have root back. :)

My next plan is to run my N4 dry (on battery) and see if that might kick something into action. (I've read elsewhere of people getting USB back by removing the battery - not an easy option on a N4, so running it dry may be the next best thing).

That Kingroot looks good. I didn't check your first link as I read "data connection" to mean a PC data connection.

KingRoot worked very well for me.

I ran the N4 dry (until it turned itself off) then plugged it into the USB and turned it back on ... still no USB data connection, so it looks like the USB connector itself is goosed. :(

Oh well - I've blocked notifications for Google Play Services so at least I'm no longer getting bugged with the update available prompt. I guess I stick with 5.1 until such time as I replace my phone. I don't know enough to trust Flashify or anything else to apply an update for me - unless someone can give me an idiot's guide step-by-step process to use it? :)

(The 5.1.1 I extracted has various Flashall files in it ... .bat and .sh at least anyway ... plus various .img files and a .zip file).

    How much step by step?
Download twrp for nexus 4 from here
Download the latest rom from here (inc kernel)
Install flashify from the play store.
    Then:
    Open flashify ...
Select recovery image ... then choose a file
Navigate to the twrp image that you downloaded before and select it.
It will ask you to restart do so. (It will also as for root access)
Once done your phone will then have twrp recovery installed.
Boot into recovery. Make a backup before doing anything else.
Also plug it into your computer and see if it can see it.
To install the rom, select install and then navigate to the zip of the rom you downloaded earlier.
    Install it.
    All done.

Whilst you are in twrp it may be worth flashing the super SU binarys for proper root. In fact even if you don't bother with the rom install you can do this step.

If you are not confident in doing the rom install twrp is always useful to have installed.
