On tv this evening there was a sad tale about a family of 4 being evicted from there 2 bed room flat as the landlord needed it for his own family. This is in Newquay,Cornwall. They cannot afford the high rents in the area so they are forced into a one room accomodation at a b and b.I live in the area and it annoys me so much that there is a raft of second homes turning some areas into ghost towns.
If people can afford 2nd homes I am sure they can afford higher council tax which could be put to use for affordable homes such as housing association provided accomodation. This house price inflation sucks!Shelter commented on how many properties are coming up as repos.Couple that to dumb !!! amertuer BTL landlords that couldn`t get the sums right having to hand back the keys I see a disaster unfolding here.

Doesn't surprise me.
The rents there are high. 1-bed flat (IF you can find one) starting at £650/month.
No jobs that would pay you that much - and jobs are seasonal anyway. Place awash with new builds for people with too much cash who are either having a 2nd home or are speculating that it will be worth more shortly. Loads of off plan going on.
I moved from there.
One room in July/August can go for £120/week.
Most landlords are renting to holidaymakers because you can make more out of them in the weeks you do let it out than you can by letting it out full-time to local people.0 -
I think it's time the whole 2nd home/seaside thing was sorted out with higher taxes & additional controls to safeguard homes for locals.

If just one person posts that it is the locals fault for selling as a second home in the first place, I am going to feed myself to the great white off St Ives or the black panther of Porthleven, .....which ever one I find first that is!
Gwenvor was 3 ft and clean for a spell today with clear blue skies. Had 2 hours in with 2 friends I have known for 30 years.
Days like today I would like to box up.0 -
it is the locals fault or more specificly the fault of their councils and mps by not ensuring a limit on holiday homes, punitively taxing them and having ample housing stock.0

The council waiting list in Newquay for a family such as the ones turfed out is about 4 years.... and if you've got no emergency, the list is about 20 years long (and growing)0

dolce vita's stock reply templates
#1. The people that run these "sell your house and rent back" companies are generally lying thieves and are best avoided
#2. This time next year house prices in general will be lower than they are now
#3. Cheap houses are a good thing not a bad thing0 -

Gwenvor is just round the corner from Sennen Cove, Cornwall - that is right down at the "toes" part.

The waves were 3 foot high.
They were clean - so not a big white messy mass.
Had 2 hours in the water surfing with two old friends.0 -
