A cost effective mobile?

Many MVNO networks give free calls and texts between phones on their network, such as Delight Mobile, which charges only 2p per text otherwise. So if you used Delight and persuaded your chatty daughter to switch to Delight, those texts would be free. I think they offer £30 credit if you port your number over to them. How many texts do I send a month depends on how chatty my youngest daughter is which would take it up to about 350 a month.
Anyway, you could order a free Delight sim to check if your Doro is unlocked (it runs on EE).Evolution, not revolution0 -
I'd recommend GiffGaff aswell. For £7.50 a month you can get unlimited texts, as well as 250 minutes and 500MB data, but it's treated as PAYG so not tied to any contract.
It piggybacks on the O2 network, so if you like O2 for the signal you are getting it should be the same.

I was after a payasyougo phone, for me it ended up being either 3 or Giffgaff. I now have them both to test at the moment as I'm not really sure of my usage
Giffgaff is dearer without any add-on but it may just be a case of comparing giffgaff 'goodybags' to 3's 'add-ons' and what suits your usage-as you are able to convert your current balance to an extra on both networks anyway, rather than having to top up and then pay again for an extra.

If you only text message you can convert your current balance to a txt only add-on on 3, which gives you 3000 in a month for £5, and even if you somehow managed to use all that up from an initial £10 top up with no other phone usage, in theory you could still have a £5 mobile balance for 250 potential more txts at 2p per min, which wont run out after the month is over.

Off the record-both companies do not offer credit card 'e-top up cards', only over the phone top ups after an online registration or those slightly awkward retail voucher receipts in which you need to enter long numbers into your phone. Judging by their forums, not having e top up cards has put a fair few people off using cheaper companies, but I imagine it keeps costs low. Tesco, EE, O2, vodafone and virgin still use them.0 -
I'm with three and just use the top up phone option from the cash point at my bank, no messing around with vouchers involved.0
