Why would he steal the key of a non-runner?Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.

Stop it being sold by the sound of it.
I am not sure what it has to do with his work though. That's confusing me a bit.
I would get it scrapped. If it isn't a decent car, and you have the V5 a scrapper will happily put a brick through the window and cart it off.
I find it strange anyone would pay several hundred pounds more than the scrap value for a non-runner that is laid up. Plus you can get the tax back on it (assuming it isn't sorn)What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
I think you need to put in writing to him :
a) you can no longer store his stuff. If he wishes to collect it, then he needs to [set out what is needed - e.g. contact you via e-mail / text to confirm time and date / arrange via a trusted third party when they will attend / provided third party with his authority to collect on his behalf.
b) that if he does not arrange to remove his stuff you will dispose of it as his expense. Set out how you will do so (e.g. I will sell what I can, in order to fund the cost of transport and disposal of any unsaleable items. All items will be priced to sell quickly OR I will arrange for a clearance company to remove everything)
c) that you requite the key to our car to be returned to you by recorded delivery by [date] failing which you will hold him responsible for the cost of obtaining a new key.
IF you think you can realistically sell his stuff then you would need to state that the net proceeds after covering any costs involved in clearing the garage and the cost of obtaining a new key for the car will be refunded to him.
You are not entitled to keep any profit.
You can go back to the police but the difficulty is, I suspect, that there is no evidence that that key was not given to him or retained by him with your consent.
They may, if they have the time, be prepared to arrange to go with you to ask for its return.
Alternatively, if the key is on the premises at his employment then you can try writing to them directly, enclosing a copy of the V5 and stating that the vehicle is yours, that the key is yours and that he has no authority to retain either, and that you require it's immediate return. All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -

Unfortunately the OP is trying to create a contract by doing this. and a contract requires and offer and an acceptance.
She cannot unilaterally charge him for the new key. Therefore she cannot deduct costs from the sale of his possesions.
The rest i agree with.0 -

I'd take the car paperwork and proof of ownership with me to his workplace, go to reception, and just state calmly that you have come to collect your property. Might work?
The supervisor refused to return it unless I went with the police. The police told me to talk to his employer.
Anyway he clearly has no intention of returning it.
The employer is relevant as the key was at his place of work. The car can't be moved AT ALL without the key without being towed and there's no way anything can get to where it's parked to tow it.Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

I'd go back to the police and state the employer is concerned they are breaking the law, and need reassurance that they are merely returning your property. Failing that, speak to the police about selling the items?"On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of."
