dodgy dealers
Car advertised with 12 month MOT, seemed decent condition and price. So I rang the dealer to arrange a viewing, and ask about the car. It turns out it doesn't have an MOT, but they will get one when it is sold from a garage they know.
It is c**p like this that makes secondhand car dealers about as trusted as politicians and why there is so much regulation of them. It is advertised as having 12 months MOT, that is a lie.
What do these con artists expect? That people will buy without a test driver, the iffy garage gives a dubious MOT and then the car turns out to be riddled with faults.

The car will leave the dealer with 12 months mot so where's the lie?
Even if it had 12 months ticket when they advertised it, what's to stop that one being iffy?0 -
I don't see the issue either.
If the dealer puts MOT on it and the car then sits on their forecourt for 2 months the buyer will want a new MOT so another cost. Far better to do once buyer has seen car.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -

Exectly, by the OPs standards new car dealers lie too as it can't come with 12 months tax until it's registered in the new keepers name.0 -
and simply inc the cost of the tax in the price0

They just mot it the day before you collect after agreeing to purchase. Calm down.0

that is all well and good but how can you legally test drive the car before purchase?
trade plates will cover the tax but you will still be driving a car with no MOT0 -

chances are the car has "some" MOT on it, but what they're doing it is selling it with a fresh full years ticket.0 -

Are you terminally dim?
Why would the dealer put an MOT on the day it goes on his forecourt, bearing in mind it could take several months to sell.0 -

that may be the case but if the car came in to the dealers with two months MOT and it has sat for three months so MOT has expired you cant legally test drive the car
my current car had five months ticket on it when i went to test drive and purchased it, it came with something the dealer called guaranteed pass so after five months i take the car back i pay for the MOT and he would cover any repairs that were required
as the dealer was 80 miles away I asked them to MOT it now and it came out of the dealers with a 12 month ticket at no cost to me
this was good for me as it got the MOT away from the tax due date and spread the cost a bit over the year0 -

that is just your interpretation of the situation
if the dealer MOT,d the car so it did have 12 months ticket and it doesnt sell this months and sat on the forecourt for many months would you expect him to amend his advert every month as the MOT ticked away, or would you prefer him to MOT the car before delivery so you got a full 12 months ticket
the test drive situation is the only thing that would worry me in this case0
