This thread is exactly why many honest small car traders have jacked it in.

Did a data check, according to that what the dealer told me is wrong, it has a months MOT, but the tax ran out last month.

Before the dealers union gets outraged again, I know the new owner pays for car tax when they get the car now.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you can't road test a car without tax? What happens if plod pulls me over in an untaxed car?

the tax ran out as soon as the car went into the trade so no car in the dealer network is taxed

as said earlier in the thread trade plates cover the tax when the car is taken for a test drive

turns out this a big fuss about nothing

No buyer with common sense is going to buy a dealer car without a test drive.

I consider myself to be a fairly sensible person but i have bought a car from a dealer without even seeing it llet alone test driving it, i bought bought and paid for over the phone and the first time i saw it was the day i went to collect it, now this was a fairly fresh car form a main dealer so i felt happy doing it, would i do the same for a two hundred b pound banger with inter galactic miles? No but then i would not buy that sort of car anyway

You do understand that secondhand dealers have a very bad rep? It is misleading stuff like this that is part of the problem.

I think that should read " it is mis understandings like this that is part of the problem" if you dont trust a certain dealer then simples just stay well clear of their dodgy little sales lot

So you can legally test drive it, so what's your rant about. If the dealer put no mot as you previously suggested that would be wrong too.

Basically you have no idea how car traders or the motor trade work, as you have found out the car has an MOT and no tax (a motor trader cannot sell a car with tax as it gets cancelled now, blame the DVLA !). It will be sold with a new MOT and driven on trade plates before hand. It's up to the new owner to tax it. This is not "dodgy"

Yes, he can. He just taxes it on the New Keeper V5C/2 doc ref, "in the new keeper's name".

'course, he then has to put the price up by the same amount to maintain the same margin, so it doesn't really make any difference...
  • Wow ive just read this and thought !!!!!!.

    1. If the garage says the car will leave with 12 Months MOT then check if it had any left on the previous MOT. ( you have done this and found out theres a month left)

    2. Tax is covered on trade plates just like all the big boys do when they take you for a test drive.

So the initial post stiring up all this mess was for nothing becasue you didnt take your time to ASK the quesiton to the garage in the first place. You instantly called them con artists. Which is bang out of order.

If your buying a car from ANYWHERE do you research and ask questions. One simple question to the garage could have avoided getting peoples backs up on here
