Android error message

I have a Galaxy S4, which I have had for about 18 months.

Recently, I have been getting an error message when I try to update the apps. A message pops up telling me what to update, usually it works fine, but now I am getting a message that says:

'Error while downloading [app name, e.g. Gmail]. There is insufficient space on the device.

A couple of weeks ago this happened, and I went through a deleted all my old emails and texts. I also cleared the cache (whatever that is). It then worked again.

Today I'm getting the error message again. How do I get more space on my phone?

Remove any unused apps or clear the cache and data of some other apps. Might get better answers if you post in the mobile phones forums section

If it will take a micro SD card install one and move some apps or photos/videos onto it.

Photos & videos can consume a large amount of internal phone storage, so have a look at what you can delete or move to a cloud service like Google Drive or Dropbox, along with uninstalling any underused apps (you can sort by size to show you the apps consuming the most storage at the top of the list). If you are using Gmail for emails, deleting emails won't free up any storage as your emails are stored on remote servers, not on your phone.

Install this app, it'll give you a visual representation of storage use

Most likely full of videos, music and photos + if you have kids, 100's of games that are no longer used because said child "uninstalled" them by deleting the icon.

My nephew did this ^^ to my mothers Nexus 7 tablet, everyone was adamant that any games he'd played, he had removed afterwards. But in truth I had to remove what seemed like hundreds of them, because all he'd done was remove the "desktop" icons.

He or she (can't assume sex just because of username) can't install apparently due to the issue in the original post.

Hardly any photos (about 10 or so), no videos, and definitely no games (unless they were already on the phone when I bought it).

I use the apps I've downloaded (not very many of these). There are lots of apps on the phone that I don't use, they were there when I bought it, and I can't see how to get rid of these.

Where is the mobile phones forum? Can I get this thread moved?

Go to Settings | Storage and see how your device storage is being used up. In my case I have 2.85GB free but the biggest usage is App data and media content (4.97GB).

Have a search for the method to wipe the data cache partition - that should help free up space (and also help the device to run faster).

PM a board guide to get this thread moved to The Mobiles Board.

    Done.

storage card 9489 MB - no idea what this means.

    media 4954 MB - ditto

    apps 3494 MB

    Android 4501 MB

    Data 4501 MB

Lots of info, but I have no idea what it means or what I should do about it!
