Why work in an admin job in Slovenia for a third of the wages?

DW is just back from Poland. Main course in a decent restaurant - £8.

Presumably Slovenian admin workers have lower living costs.

Come to UK and they might get better jobs and income. They could be unlucky and end up in one of the slum rentals, but that's a risk.

I don't think they aspire to perpetually low UK wages. They want to move up the ladder and let others fill in the bottom slots.

They don't make it easy for us, that's for sure.

Can't they wear different coloured hats or something?

The [STRIKE]racists[/STRIKE] anti-immigration lot or the immigrants?

I think racists already have a range of head wear fashioned out of pillow cases or similar...with eye hole slots cut for ease of use.

I think the article was alluding to the fact that we can accept and cater for a very clear cultural mix. This is just a premise. Do we want obvious cultural diversity or a homogenous population? Why should we expect somewhere like Boston (lincs) to have the same feel as say Knutsford?

But what if they come here for 2-3 years.
Put up with sharing a room or living in a slum (or even under a flyover) and then go back home to live llike a king.

So come to the UK and send the money earnt home.

No different to the huge number of expats working in the Middle East. No long term aim of remaining there.

The difference is that low skilled jobs are easy to fill. Technical ones command large salaries. As the expertise has to be imported.

I'm a fan of a mobile European workforce. I have said this before. I have worked in Europe for short stints before.

This is a different proposition to permanent long term migration.

the much praised telegraph goes on to say

But as Mark Carney, the (immigrant) Governor of the Bank of England, recently observed, low wages are kept down by a never-ending supply of talented newcomers happy with the minimum wage. So all of this, while pretty good for the rich, is tougher if you’re competing with immigrants for jobs, school places, a GP appointment or social housing. Failing to recognise the real pressures people face, or to confuse such worries as xenophobia, is the surest way to incubate extremism. This basic point is one that Britain understands very well – which explains both our tolerance, and the chaos on the continent.

Sudden vast movements of people always will create issues of some kind. The EU concept is a political dream. Without a structured plan.

it doesn't seem to be a dream but an actual reality.
What else do you call over 7 million new faces in the UK?

It's an experiment I'd say. There may be a dream end goal they had in mind.

But with a proper experiment, you have to be clear on your expectations; consistent in your method; and to have clear and accurate measurements.

None of this seems to have been considered. I think it's using the "wing it" methodology ! :)
