Immigration is great news for anyone who earns over 30k, especially if they already own a house and have their kids in school or live near enough to a good school.
And lets be honest, to the 'proper' media does anyone else matter?I think....0 -
Most immigration statistics show every pixel or dot on the graph as an identical unit; equivalent in every way to it's neighbouring pixels.
Mass immigration is different though. You are going to get peaks and troughs in different geographical areas, with differing impact.
There are bound to be tensions in some place. Some people struggle with change. It's easy to make the process of change more acceptable. You bolster the infrastructure *before* the change occurs. We need to be pro-active, not re-active.
Since businesses benefit enormously from the influx of skilled labour, they should be asked to pay more through local business rates; with the increased money ring-fenced for improved local services. We win two ways then; we get the required labour force AND the improved services we need.0 -

what is a 'required' work force?
is that one that meets the needs of the existing population or one that meets the needs of one growing at 400,000 per year?0 -

And pretty good for anyone who needs nursing or a doctor or an accountant or a lawyer or to pay tuppence a pound less for their strawberries.0 -

But we could have a scheme that let in nurses if we didn't have enough but kept out strawberry pickers and so wages paid by strawberry farmers would have to increase to the point where locals would do the job. Sure strawberries would cost more but the lowest paid would get paid more and interest rates would have risen to address wage inflation so all but the lowest paid would be ambiguously worse off.I think....0 -
People who are anti immigration generally cant differentiate between types of immigrants, I have noticed.
Its usually the people with the biggest sense of entitlement themselves who are most enraged about foreigners 'taking their jobs and benefits'.0 -

I take great pride in telling Australians that I've taken their jobs and their women.0 -

Because of fear I suspect.
The local long term unemployed already carry the weight of being classed as lazy; whilst the EE migrant is already seen as skilled/hard working/compliant/good citizen.
The odds are already stacked. In the push for jobs and benefits the locals will be outfought.
It's okay though; they will just kick off some new riots; and the government will send in money for a few new garden festivals in the hotspots.0 -
