When you see somewhere you like and come back home, go to google maps and put in your post code or address and find the house. You can normally spot it easy enough.

Once you have found it, keep it on the top down perspective (not streetview).

12 o'clock / up in your web browser is north. You can see then if you have a south or north facing garden. If its your backdoor that faces downwards to 6 o'clock your in luck, you have a south facing garden. If your front door points downwards you have a north facing garden.

Granted it won't mean as much on a house with a big garden, but if you have an average two / three bed (even four) detached or semi with fencing of around 5 ft high, you might find it gets very little light and worse still you might be fighting off damp.

We are currently in a 'norther' small two bed rental (have now put in an offer in a nice three bed) and we have a lot of issues with mildew on the back windows and even the walls if we don't keep on top of it.

I would have thought everyone checks in advance whether their potential home has a north or south facing garden? Thats the first thing I do to eliminate it!

Admit I never thought of it as I was so taken in by how nice the place is. Lucky for me its south facing (the agent mentioned it). I guess this is for people not so smart like me.

Surely everybody already knows that up on a map is north and down is south?

But if the front of the house faced north instead, then the front would have mildew etc. just the same!

Mine's a terrace facing directly East (west facing garden).

I've yet to find the side of the house that faces North!

One of the walls that's attached to one of your neighbours I would imagine! Unless there is a black hole on that elevation ;)
