I don't bank with Barclays but the bank where I have my main account can only go back 10 years - my account has been open much longer.
Having said that what use will they be in a real court case? Certainly olden bank statements were not as detailed as today - would you not need the actual documentary evidence of transfers in and out of your account?0 -
Bank statements are just that. Documented facts of money going in and out. 2004 was hardly in the dark ages. Just took a letter of complaint to get the info I required and I hope anyone who is need of the same type of evidence will read this post and realise that all is not lost and not 'Basically stuffed!'
Also, unusually large amounts of money going in and out an account are normally flagged by the bank for money laundering purposes and a record is kept. Police can obtain statements as evidence going back to when an account was opened, so why shouldn't Joe public for their own accounts! It's all there in black and white. The fact that they gave me £50 for misinformation says it all really.0 -

That MAY be the case for some banks and for some types of accounts but certainly not for all.0 -

Bank statements are not stored from when account was opened.
It would be amazing in certain circumstances if they was.
Even then you won't get a proper statement you'll more than likely get a list of transactions or mirofish shots etc.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
They arrived today along with my £50 cheque. A whole years worth and they contain all the information I get on my regular statements! When I asked how far they could go back, the chap said 'From when you opened your account!' So I have to disagree with you when you say 'Bank statements are not stored from when the account was opened!' The proof is in the pudding.
Considering I only emailed them yesterday morning with my complaint, they've done a marvellous job.
Nothing special about my account, just a bog standard current account.0 -

My mom opened her bank account as a teen and she's 63 now ....
Are you telling me Lloyds bank can provide statements from approx 47 years ago?
Working for a bank someone staying they can provide statements from account opening In certain circumstances is non sense as per my example above.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
I don't believe Barclay's would send a compensation cheque. For a bank that's normally way ahead of the curve when it comes to technology etc that seems ridiculously archaic, why not transfer the money straight into the account?DEBT FREE!

I moved to HSBC last September so my Barclays account is closed. I take umbridge that you are basically calling me a liar. Had a Barclays account since 1992. Think quill pens were out of use by then.0

Absolute poppycock to conclude all banks keep all statements for all accounts forever just because you got what you were after.
Is it half term anywhere?0 -
