Retrieving old bank statements

I need three months of my Barclays account statements from 2004 for a court hearing.
Had an appointment with an advisor last Monday who took all the details and said it wouldn't be a problem and that they'd be posted to me. Today I received a letter saying that they can only go back six years.
On the strength of the advice from the advisor I passed on this information to my solicitor who in turn wrote to the other party's solicitor to request more time.

It is extremely important that I get this information from them and I'm hoping someone reading this will have some advice.

Thanks in advance

If they don't have them what can you do - after all you would have had original ones from them the first time round and you didn't keep them.

    Basically you are stuffed.

No, the bank have adivsed they do not have records over 6 years, which is pretty common in most financial institutions. Take this with you to the court, it is hardly your fault you have not kept EVERY financial document since year dot.

May be worth pursuing the bank further, if the said account has remained opened all this time there could be archived records still on file, may not be retrievable in the form of a traditional statement but they may be able to help. Just could take longer. In my time when working in that industry we could get account reports which went back to when it was opened.

Banks now only keep records for six years so anything before that they won't have access to even in archive records, needs to delete files to allow new files to be saved, after the the FCA only say six years and after that all documentation is securely shredded...

I would take the letter to the court and explain that you are unable to obtain records they require as its before the 2009.

you cant have what is not there, I have this conversation with customers on a weekly basis, printing a statement when its not there to print is very unlikely....

Your solicitor should be aware of the FCA and the rules with storage of confidential paperwork as I'm sure they only keep records for the same time period.

I only keep records for the last year, this includes all my statements and P60's, although many of my accounts are now paper free so they are stored in a online file within my internet banking profile...

    hope this helps...

Won't they accept photocopies of the originals from your own files ?

If the bank no longer has the data available then you won't be able to provide the information. You'll need to inform your solicitor.

Thank you for your advice. Although this isn't for a PPI claim I understand that banks are reluctant to give out information and use the 6 year rule. I also understand that in cases of fraud the bank can go back years so my data must be stored somewhere.
Have just emailed customer services saying that I just need details of large amounts transferred to and from my account, so fingers crossed.

Just an update for anyone who may experience the same problems as myself. Following my letter of complaint, Barclays have just called and they have access to ALL my bank statements going back to when I first opened the account and are in the process of sending all that I require. They are also sending me a cheque for £50 as compensation for being given misinformation.

Perhaps you could make copies when you get them just in case you lose them again>.

Didn't lose them, they were taken from my home. You had no knowledge about what you were saying. Bank statements ARE stored from the time of opening. I asked a simple question and you were wrong.
