I found it was £1343 to fly a mutli-stop flight from Lodnon to Cairns (Australia) and then from Perth (after a road trip in OZ) to Auckland and then home again to London.

Then I checked from Stockhom where I will be a few days earlier and it was cheaper to fly from there even though it had an extra flight! It only cost £1048 to fly the same trip from Stockholm instead of from London - nearly £300 cheaper! If you wanted to save about £250 you can fly to Stockholm for about £50...

I am not sure if they allow you to "skip" the first flight (i.e. buy the flight from Stockholm and then say that you will get on at London)!!

    Probably not I guess...

    You can be sure.

DH & me are off to Sydney in a few weeks, flying on Qatar Airways, in business class for a shade under £2k each return.

Routing is ARN-DOH-HKG-SYD with the same on the return leg. We are taking a positioning flight LHR-ARN mid morning on the day of our flight from ARN, used Avios and paid £100 for both of us return to fly BA in CE (for the baggage allowance). All being well, we will have 7 hours at ARN on the outbound and 5 hours on the inbound but so be it.

We checked out Oslo and Dublin to start our ex-Eu but decided on ARN for a reason I can't remember now as we booked this back in July.

We wanted go go to Sydney in business class for the comfort/lounge access and when we checked BA from LHR, the cost would have been double what we've paid. We're lucky we can take the additional time both for the posititioning flights and the routing, I appreciate this wouldn't work for everyone and I'm aware it might be a bit risky.

From UK airports book a return to Amsterdam (AMS). Then book your long-haul flight from AMS onwards. Check a few destinations to see how much you save.

    Or, indeed, any EU airport.

This is well known and the relative merits and potential pitfalls have been discussed often on here over the last several years.
