You can't, its down because either the demand has crashed it, or they have deliberatively done it to stop them going everyone doing it at once.

Its the same thing as the banks used to do when there was a crisis, shut the doors! :) anyone remember Argentina?

I take it your car doesn't have a petrol guage, or could you just not read it?

Nope, I am a consultant and so work away from home. At that time I was working in Middlesborough (I lived in South Manchester at the time). As usual, I filled up my car on Monday to drive there, and then used up a lot of the petrol driving to different sites during the week. Under normal circumstances I would have filled up my car on Friday and driven home.

I watched the petrol hoarding unfold - listened to the government insisting that therewas no need to panic buy - so I didn't. By the time I realised there was a need to panic buy, the pumps were empty. I didn;t have enough to get home so I had to stay over at the weekend.

Not all of us work within walking distance of work. Smarty pants.

Go and queue up at a branch like 100s of other people seem to be doing? :)

By the sounds of it, there's a bit of a run on the bank at the moment. :S

I guess that'll be at the same time we also point to the heard of flying pigs going overhead  10 years is a long time in technology, pigs might well have harnessed flight!

    Panicking causes the problem.

(Lavendyr can you reserve me a place in the queue? ;) )
  • I'm a NR shareholder. I have no savings or mortgage with NR at the moment. All my family have shares in NR from when it became a bank. We didn't buy them. Even now, the share price now is the bigger than when it became a bank.

There are many people, particularly in the North East of England who still have shares with NR from when it became a bank. They will probably not sell because its a windfall - unless they are paniced into doing it. There may be some investors keen to pick up a bargain when things settle down.

As a result, I'm holding onto my shares and will cash them in when I actually need them. Hopefully they will have made a recovery. My family have decided to do the same thing too.

This is still a totally irresponsible post, and will make matters worse not better.

Wombat42 explains the situation, it has nothing to do with solvency, and you are not going to loose the money you have in accounts.

Withdraw the money and buy some more shares?

Hi, as some rather clever people noticed this coming and started this thread back in August, which banks/building societies do you now regard as safer for depositors than Northern Rock? Thanks
