Wireless problem

The USB adapter supplied by Aldi could be 802.11b (11mbps) instead of 802.11g (54mbps) - have you checked the description on the adapter?
Anyway 11mbps is still much faster than your internet connection speed.
this is the one:

it should say wpa after security enabled, assuming that you are using wpa, not wep.
I doubt your problem was firefox, limited or no connectivity means that the pc/laptop can't authenticate, but can see the router, which is caused by the wrong encryption key or type, or mac address filtering.
angling the netgear aerial might help your speed issue, assuming that you haven't changed the router settings to b only
would changing the router settings to b only afect the speed? if so, how do i check?0 -

Yes, 802.11/b has a max speed of 11Mbps but in practise about half that, so it depends on your connection speed if you would notice any difference. 802.11/b should have a bit more range compared to 802.11/g. Check you connection speed here. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
if you go into the router settings, under wireless, there should be a box for g&b/gonly/bonly - make sure it is g&b.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
