Trouble-free entry for immigrants and terrorists?

Stansted Airport was certainly being very helpful when we arrived back from Dublin last weekend.

The bus took us all the way from the bottom of the aircraft steps to a door leading to the baggage reclaim area in the terminal building - without going through immigration or passport control, though we could see the queues and were grateful we weren't in them.

No wonder we don't know how many immigrants are in the country! The Aussies who'd spent ages filling out their landing cards in the seats beside me were completely baffled.

Is this a common experience at Stansted?

UK and Ireland are in the Common Travel Area, so there needn't be passport control.

Since Irish people have a legal right to come to the UK, this is what you should expect. Similar controls are applied to flights arriving from Manchester, for exactly the same reason.

I do hope that an independent Scotland will introduce controls on immigration from the Stansted area: otherwise there will not be much hope for humanity!

It's due to budget cuts, I crossed the East Sussex/Kent border twice this morning and wasn't stopped and searched once :mad:

You arrived on a domestic flight, there is no need for passport control. The Australians behind you will have filled in their landing cards when they arrived in Dublin which will cover them for all their UK internal travel.

    Shocking!

I recall a few years ago, when the police did their duty properly. They went through my passport, asking me about the countries I had been to and about any plans to visit Arab countries. And all for a flight from Exeter to Edinburgh!

Dublin - Stansted isn't a domestic flight (though I know what you mean!).

I'm personally more baffled where those Australians even got landing cards from. They took a load from Ireland and assumed they could use them anywhere?

Biggles, I wonder if we were on the same flight as I was quite surprised not to go through immigration at Stanstead last Saturday night on my flight back from Dublin? I had to show my passport when I arrived in Dublin and apart from a quick look by the Ryanair staff on my way back no-one asked to see any ID.

No you didn't have to show your passport. You had to show photo ID - you chose to use a passport.

While I can (just!) understand why people who have never been to Ireland wouldn't know what the Common Travel Area is, you really should know if you've actually visited Ireland. It's not as if it's new - it's been in place for 92 years!
  • You arrived on a domestic flight

How old are you? Dublin hasn't been part of the UK since 1922!

True, but since the flight was within the Common Travel Area it had the same status as a domestic flight.
