EE 08 Price Hike - Cancel?

Hi

I received a text message yesterday morning from EE telling me that there is "Good news" - from 1st July there will be changes - 0800, 0808 and 116 will be free and it will cost 44p (!?) per minute plus a service charge to call 084, 087, 09 or 118 numbers.

This sounds like anything but "Good news."

Is it possible to cancel my contract (which is a T-Mobile contract which was taken out through Tesco Phone Shop) without penalty, so that I can take my business (and preferably PAC) elsewhere?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I asked about this in another thread for my Vodafone contract, but it looks like these numbers are apparently 'regulated' meaning we don't have much choice.

I am personally going to try and cancel my vodafone contract as I have some other issues with them too. So I suppose it's worth a try.

My contract with TMobile says all 08 numbers are included in my 1000 minutes.

Did your contract say this before?

I hope they don't change the terms

All you need to do is demonstrate how much you spend per month on 084, 087, 09 and 118 calls then show how much extra you will be spending in the future to your detriment
It's not just about the money

If charge changes are due to changes in regulation then you cannot cancel. As these changes are mandated by OFCOM and ALL phone operators have to comply, the T&C's allow this.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

I see what you are saying for 0800 and 0808 calls, but surely this isn't the case as far as 0870, 0845 and 0844 calls are concerned?

    Quote from T&C's

2.11.4 We can change these terms and conditions if new laws or rules make it necessary or where We are required to do so by OFCOM or any other regulatory body. We will endeavour to give You 30 days’ Written Notice if We have to do this. The new terms and conditions will automatically apply to You once any notice period that We are able to give You has run out.

No need to call them numbers, use 0870 to find alternative numbers or use 1 of the apps.

EE apparently also says that if are on pay monthly then you pay £3 per month then you can call 300 minutes worth of 084/87 number for 1p/min (I assume that means 1p access charge per minute).

So 1p is probably more like the true cost of carrying the call, and EE then make a 44x markup on it.

I thought this UK calling thing is to make calling the 08 numbers clearer and cheaper?

I think the number of 'alternatives' are dying out. Most companies now either move to 01/03 (which is free to call), or move to 08 numbers delivered directly to their phone system with no alternative (rather than pointing a 08 to their 01 number).

The Ofcom changes to 084, 087, 09 and 118 call prices on 1 July 2015 force no specific price rises or price cuts. Some numbers will go up on some or all networks. Some numbers will go down on some or all networks. Most networks will have a mix of price rises and price cuts, this is also the case with EE.

As a result of various regulation and guidance over the last 18 months, post sales helplines used by retailers, traders and passenger transport companies, most government departments and public services and most banks have moved to 03 numbers. With the forthcoming requirement for all users of 084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers to declare the Service Charge, this trend will continue.
