Passing on Fees charged on Postage

  • There's not much room for lowering it on a parcel. If it is a letter rather than parcel, sure it could be lower.

How much was seller charged for posting?

It cost her £2.80 to post and she's charged me £4.40 due to "fees"

The delivery charge is for post and packing, I don't think a 1.60 add on is unreasonable. However whether I think it's reasonable is neither here or there - if the listing stated the delivery charge was 4.40 and that was what you paid, I am not sure what the issue is?

Note that when you place a bid Ebay, you are agreeing the the sellers terms and condition, so if you felt it was high, you should not have bid. My opinion is that sticking the knife in is wrong when delivery fees are clearly shown at the bidding stage. Ebay may allow you to leave these stars my sense of play, says doing it is wrong.

Real cost of post will be £3.08 plus whatever packaging costs are.

As a seller, my own postage costs are absorbed in to the item cost, delivery 'free' on everything, well on ebay anyway.

Saves much hassle like this, in stating a delivery cost only to find some items cost less, some more and have buyers contacting me over a pound here and there.

Perhaps it sounds a bit like I am happy to make a pound or two on postage, I'm not, it is just a hassle getting it perfect every time, and being totally honest, for a pound I'd not be bothered.

Just to add, I've just noticed this text at the bottom of the listing... hope this clarifies

According to the information that seller put on the listing she has overcharged you by £1.26. If the postage was £2.80, plus 28p for the 10% ebay charge and 6p for the packaging it should have been £3.14, not the £4.40 charged. A bit silly putting all that information in writing and not adhering to it IMO.

    To be exact -
If she has charged you £4.40, ebay would get 10% of £4.40 ie 44p and paypal would get 3.4% of £4.40 ie 15p.
    So the total deductions would be 44p +15p +2.80 = £3.39
That would leave her with £1.01 for packing materials and mark up.
The above is just on the postage.

For anything that is going to cost me £2.80 to post, I always charge £3.20 or £3.30 to cover postage and ebay/paypal charges. Most of my packing material is recycled so I don't worry too much about it.
  • P&P at any charge is fair. You saw how much the seller would charge you to package it and deliver it to you, you paid and they delivered. What it cost them from their supplier (Royal Mail) is irrelevant.

It just so happens that Tesco sell beans for more than they paid for them. Yet I bet you buy them without second thought.

I bought something the other month and the seller did have a note in the description about Ebay taking part of the postage costs.

They did not say how much, unfortunately they had to higher the shipping cost.

Conversely, if a buyer thinks the postage charge is unfair, then it is, no matter what anyone else thinks.

It is a curious thing that if Tesco actually put the price they pay for items on them they'd probably sell a lot less. If they sell the beans for 50p and label the cost price as 12p sales would plummet, irrespective of how much each item costs in storage, staff and other costs. There's not much you can do about perceptions, people, myself included, are largely daft.

Bonkers nonsense like this is self defeating as it encourages buyers to compare the postage paid with the charge made by the seller.

Charging more than the stamp costs will have a proportion of people hitting the stars.

This is one reason why I went inclusive with my P and P for about 99% of my sales. Whilst the OP does seem to have paid over the odds on postage and is of course entitled to leave what stars she chooses, we have had enough threads on here where buyers knock the stars purely for actually daring to charge the actual stamp cost.

Having inclusive p and P gives me one less thing to worry about.
