  • I find myself in a rather unfortunate position and may well have discovered this too late. What follows is a tale of woe.

Friday August 3rd at 5pm I was made redundant. No consultation given and no money coming from the company.

On Monday August 6th I went down to the job centre to register for jobseekers where I get turned away and given a phone number to call. 2nd port of call is the bank because I need to sort my loan protection out, again turned away with a phone number to call. Understandable though this time, as I have to claim through an insurance company. (It's worth noting that my loan payment is £150 and is due on August 26th.) I get home and make those important phone calls, I'm given an appointment to sign up for jobseekers on August 15th and the Insurance Company are going to send me the forms I need to make a claim.

On Wednesday August 8th the forms to make my claim with the insurance company arrive. Start filling those in and notice that not only do I have to suffer the indignation of returning to the company that made me redundant for them to explain why on this form. I also have to get someone to prove I signed up for jobseekers. Queue another phone call to the job centre asking for an earlier interview. The answer is no due to the other 149 people that were made redundant at the same time as me they’re quite busy. So that means I can't complete the insurance claim forms for 1 week.

1 week later, Wednesday August 15th. Jobseekers interview over, insurance claim form now complete and in the post.

Friday August 24th, call from the insurance company, yay I've been approved subject to authorisation. So that means the payment I need covering is going to be covered right? No, that means I have more forms to fill in.
Queue another trip to the bank where I have to ask for help as if the loan payment is taken out, I'm flat broke and in the red. Unfortunately I have to accept a £500 overdraft to cover the payment and to live on until things pick up. Though I'm not likely to see any redundancy pay until October and I was told I wouldn't see a jobseekers payment of £59 until the end of the month. It's not all bad though, I have got a temporary job starting on the 30th.

Monday August 27th, loan repayment is taken, £20 into an overdraft I never wanted but didn't have much choice in taking.

Wednesday August 29th, 2nd jobseekers meeting, still no sign of jobseekers payment. Get home, 2nd set of insurance claim forms have arrived which requires proof that I've signed on at jobseekers. One gets the sense that the insurance company have no sense of timing. 2nd trip to the job centre in 1 day to get these forms filled in. Anyone would think I have nothing better to do then go backwards and forwards getting forms filled in. (It should be noted that this doesn't include the debacle of when I tried to claim council tax and housing benefit.)

So after a somewhat poor start to the month, it ended on a similar note, though consolation can be found in that I'm working again. After all that though, I may not have been miss sold PPI but when I needed it to help me, it didn't. Let's face fact's, it's the overdraft that has helped me.
Even though I have claimed and now can not claim I have been miss sold PPI. I’m still considering a letter of complaint, I understand things take time to sort out but when you’re out of work and are slowly running out of money to live on after paying all the bills. It’s just not good enough really.

you usually have to wait 30 days before making a claim for unemployment. what does your paperwork/policy booklet say? I'm not sure you have a reason to complain, if they are following procedures

regarding you not having money for that month, that is why it is recommended to have at least 3 months wages in savings incase of an emergency. some people call it rainy day
  • I have just filled in the Financial Ombudsman form and copied letters to send with it.After 14 days and 2 letters the Coop Bank sent a delaying letter!!Irealised as well ,as being told I would only be given the loan if I took out a ppi , I wasn't asked about pre existing medical conditions....
Of which ,unfortunately ,I have several.and I had a knee op. in 2006 .So I reckon I may have a good claim !Wish me luck!! Tatton Lady
  • hello all

do you think i can claim?

when i was in college and working i was offered a barclay card which i took.

whilst still in education i lost my job and therefore tried to claim on my payment protection.

when i got the form it want my jsa details which i didnt have because i couldnt claim jsa while in full time education.

i rang up and asked if i could claim anyway but they said no cos i couldnt prove i was out of work!

this was about 4 yrs ago now.

    so what do you reckon?
 If i didnt have any bad luck id have no luck at all!!

  • Please help. Sorry if this sounds obvious (or should have been posted on an IVA thread) but can I still make a PPI claim if I have subsequently been IVA'd. I have read Martins article and am positive I have a case against my lender (EGG) on the basis I was told the insurance was a condition of the loan. Not only did my cover represent almost half of my repayments but when I broke my leg the claim was rejected on the basis that I hadn't been working full time before the accident. It would be nice to get something back as with the repayments I probably wouldn't have had to IVA at all! Thanks in advance,

    Martin
  • Hi,
I'm currently trying to reclaim ppi from lloydstsb. So far no joy, they say that i understood all the terms when i took the loan/ppi and ticked the 'optional box' but i'm arguing that it was implied (and pushed) that i could not have the (consolidated) loan without the ppi.
Two questions that i need help with are:

    1. If i cancel the ppi i'm told i cannot receive a refund for the remainder of the term of the loan i.e i will continue paying for ppi even though i no longer have it. Is this allowed?

    2. If i further challenge Lloydstsb over the ppi, will i run the risk of losing my bank account with them and also be asked to pay back the loan immeadiately?

    Please advice,
  • Lets look at this another way. Someone took a credit card in 2004 with ppi. They have had a balance in the region of £10k. They cancel their ppi in August 2007, and then say that they did not agree to the ppi in 04.

Now the adviser in the bank has to fill in a statement about this, about the sale in 2004. all so that someone can try to get the ppi back, they they say never agreed to it. even though they signed and its been on every statement since

the adviser from then, has to be investigated. is that fair?
  • Hi folks, looking for some advice here please.

I sent the first template letter for reclaiming PPI to Mint (credit card) and Egg (loan).

Haven't yet had a full response from Egg, but Mint have - in a nutshell - sent me a photocopy of my original signed form where PPI was 'included' under the details of the contract I was signing with them. So, they're saying it was on the form and I signed it.

Is this leaving me with a leg to stand on? In my view, I didn't want the PPI and didn't know it was there because it wasn't discussed. But, obviously I signed the form so I should have read it. Am I up the creek with no paddle?

Any advice would be great - not sure if I should send the second template or not....

What have you got to lose by sending the 2nd letter. These companies are relying on people not following up these complaints. Go for it and let us know how you got on!

  • I took out a single premium PPI four years ago. I feel that it was misold on the basis that my employer covers me for sickness and offers redundancy (I had been there 10 years at the time etc. I also feel that I was pressured into taking the policy by the representitive. The policy is for 6 years but the mortgage has a further 11 years to run after the policy expires.

I have written to the company that sold me the policy and they informed me that my complaint could not be upheld.

Should I continue and tell them I will take them to the FO, or should I cancel the policy and take the refund for the remaining 2 years?
