Hi
Our box is playing up at least once a week
It basically doesnt respond to the remote at all , you have to turn it off , then it wont come out of stand by , so i follow the software reset instructions online , and eventually it comes back on
Its annoying and were not in warranty , should i just suck it up and pay for an engineer to come , would they replace the box like for like etc ?
Or any other tips to see whats wrong? i have checked all the connections , i did have to re-do the two LNB cables but they are nice and tight so i cant see its those that are the issue?
Cheers

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

Have you tried a different remote control? We're on our 3rd!
I've had one box fail: and I just threatened Sky that I'd quit their service - they gave me a new HD box (HD had just come out) and I had to take HD service.. but they also credited my account with £100 to pay for most of the HD.
If you truly think it's broke; don't pay for an engineer if you're out of the first 12 months of your contract. Demand a new box.0 -
Unfortunately, you haven't stated the make and model number from the label, nor the age, so I can't offer any specific advice.0

its a sky + 2tb hd box , a year oldNever, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0

The box has buttons on it. Next time it plays up, get off your sofa and try pressing those, and if that doesn't work (and you've had the card out and cleaned it) there's nothing left but the box. The good news, as you've been told, is that a replacement box can be had for the cost of an engineer visit (£60) or less.
If you're a bit more technically minded, you could take a chance that it's the hard drive, and swap it out, and even copy the programmes over.
Or, there's also a software update out that might be worth trying if you haven't got it yet.
Make sure you've no recordings coming up. Remove power from the box. Leave for 5 mins. With the TV on and the Sky input selected, hold the 'Back Up' button ON THE BOX, NOT remote, and reconnect power. You should get a horrible looking message on screen saying it's looking for new software. Leave it for about 10 mins.0 -
its a sky + 2tb hd box , a year old
Up to a year old, it's still in warranty, so you may be in time. If not, ask to cancel (since you are out of minimum term) and then tell retentions that you can't afford to pay to fix it-a free call out will then be offered. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
That sounds reasonable, as buying secondhand you are relying on the seller's honesty and the £30 gets you a warranty and checkup on cabling etc.
One can assume that a replacement box will be of equal or later spec than the one replaced ?0 -
I work in the Sky retentions team.
Our TV Tech team no longer have the option of offering a free service call.
Now, neither do we.
We do, however, have the option of sending an engineer out for £30 .
...so if someone phones up with a defective box and cancels over the £30..Sky are going to accept the cancellation ??I'll be VERY surprised :rotfl:0
