Is working from home just a big doss really?

Those that work from home, do you think like MallyGirl a place at home that you can call work makes it easier. When you're there you know you're working. I had a small junk room which i've almost finished now making it into an office.
Yes - I have my own workspace and when I finish my shift (like I just have now) when I get up from my desk I've mentally "left work" until the next shift.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Can I be nosy and ask what jobs all you home workers do please?
I would LOVE to work from home.
I'm an academic. I'm allowed to work from home - we are very set up for video conferencing and phone meetings (I work for a distance education provider) so it is easy. I tend to go into the office most days as I need to be around for my research group, but if I have an impending deadline then I work from home and divert the calls to my home phone. I only work 500 meters from my office, so can come in at short notice. Many of my colleagues work from home most of the week.
I get more done from home, but I do work much longer hours than I do if I am in the office. Sometimes I get wrapped up in stuff and don't sleep very much - you can't do that in the office.
I don't get distracted at home (and I don't get less done if I am still in my pajamas curled up on a beanbag with loud music in the background!) - I appreciate the space to think and there are far fewer distractions. I consider myself lucky that my employer allows us and trusts us to do that.
My other bits of work (in exams and assessment) is all home working stuff - I tend to do that in the evenings.:staradmin:starmod: beware of geeks bearing .gifs...:starmod::staradmin:starmod: Whoever said "nothing is impossible" obviously never tried to nail jelly to a tree :starmod:0 -
Depends on the job - IT costs tend to be higher with more remote working - both in terms of equipment *and* support.
Not in my experience, most places I work supply a laptop and already have VPN so costs are the pretty similar regardless of work location and support costs the same as its usually all out sourced to india where they can remotely take control and fix any issues.
Where I am now, it costs them for each desk 8k a year, so w@h makes sense, unless you work for a dinosaur director who likes to see his troops.0 -
Oh please don't talk to me about tech support outsourced to India !
Ours are like a comedy script of misunderstandings and long pauses -I will do *anything* rather than deal with them as I always end up with a massive headache for the rest of the day as it is such a frustrating experience LOL
It's probably the biggest downside of homeworking for me in my particular job (I realize not all off shore tech support is like this) and I'd open champagne if they brought our support back onshore.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Ours are in South America not India but the same issues apply. If I was in the office I would still have to phone the same people so there is no difference there for us.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans

I have a studio flat, so having a dedicated room is not possible. However, I do have an office corner.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?
