Do you switch off the microwave oven every night?

Do you switch off the cooker every night? (If electric)

Do you switch off the dishwasher every night?

Do you switch off the washing machine every night?

    Etc. etc.
Of course, I have all those devices individually switched so they are turned off as soon as the utility is complete. What surprised me most was how much energy the washing machine was using whilst sat their doing absolutely nothing, not a single light on.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.
  • In one of my first health and safety inductions (circa 1999) I was told that electrical equipments left plugged 24/7 were the major source of fires in Britain. Maybe this has changed through the years but it has stuck in my head ever since and I usually turn as many devices as possible off at night.
  • I use a power down device that was free from EON a few years ago - it shuts everything off when the pc is shut down - monitor, speakers and home hub - never had an issue with my connection speed in all the years that I've used it.

Mine is on a timer, goes of every night, comes on every morning

That's a good idea... I'll put my alarm clock on a timer as I don't need it until morning.

    ;)

Ah but my alarm clock is based on network time so it will reset to the correct time as soon(ish) it is on so I can't lie in:mad:

My router based on max wattage will save me £5.81 / year if I switch it off overnight** , so I could save 20.63 / year by switching it off during the day**

**based on night = 8 hrs day=16 hrs

Love it when this thread topic makes it's annual appearance.

    Not aimed at OP.

Turn off the router and save around £5/yr, yet quite happily pay £30/mth for a phone to check your Fakebook status and impress your mates.

My router is on 24/7.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Not much point switching it off here - Marley can be on t'internet until 3am, and I can be on from 6am onwards - not much downtime :D

My parents switch theirs off overnight. I found it very annoying whilst staying there, trying to pass the time around 4am because littl'un woke up wanting to play. Not even FB to moan on.

MSE: many of the benefits of a helpful family, without disadvantages like having to compete for the tv remote

Virgin's Superhub uses 10W - that's 88kWHr per year, or £15. Switching it off for 8 hours a night will save only £5.

My router uses about 4w, that's about 3-4kWh per month, running 24/7. I don't know what my unit cost is, but estimating 25p, that's about £1 per month.

Wow, if you guys pay this much for electricity, then you have bigger problems than switching off a router anyway. :D We pay ~11p/KWh...
