The other view on this, particularly with low consumption devices like modems and routers is that repeated turning on and off each day _may_ shorten their lives and it then becomes difficult to equate power savings to replacement cost
If it's VM replacements are free :D

Nope, don't switch mine off. In the house we've got smartphones, tablets, Sky boxes, Roku boxes, network attached storage devices etc. that all tend to download and apply updates in the early hours.

And then there's just the convenience knowing that my wife and I can watch that episode of whatever on Netflix in our bedroom before sleeping, without having to toddle off to switch the router off and come back - and that there's no delay in the morning when checking emails and whatnot.

Mine is on a timer, goes of every night, comes on every morning

I do not play games, download films etc, just e-mail & the likes of MSE

Never noticed any slow downs, but I started with dial up, so to me it is all fast

Do you switch off the microwave oven every night?

Do you switch off the cooker every night? (If electric)

Do you switch off the dishwasher every night?

Do you switch off the washing machine every night?

    Etc. etc.
  • I switch it off once a week, so that my internet-phone booster thingy can re-sync itself. I don't see the point in turning it off at night considering how little it does during those hours.

Plus, i like that my phone updates all its apps overnight, rather than slowing it down during the day. I'd rather it did that on wifi too

I turn mine of every night and I'm going to buy a 5g bag of Walkers crisps* with the savings.

    * This is an estimate of what the bag sizes will be reduced to by the time I have saved enough money :)

I only turn mine off if I'm leaving the house .... so it's not turned off overnight, just when I power down the PC to go out into the world.

So I guess in a couple of years, the timer will have paid for itself. :rotfl:

Sometimes I download a series to my Skybox overnight
I have a Hive box which needs access
Devices which use the hub 24/7 will become more frequent but there is a downside as sentient beings from other galaxies will find it easier to control me if I leave it on and I will be £8.73 poorer each year

I used to turn Virgin SuperHub off at night before I got a Kindle and a wifi box (can't remember the name) for Sky catchup tv and a laptop and wifi printer, all connecting wirelessly.

I had nothing but bother with the devices reconnecting, sometimes they did , sometimes they didn't, when I switched the SuperHub back on.

Now I leave it on all the time and never had to reconnect anything since.

    It just all works.

Worth the cost of the electricity for a hassle free life.

Isn't that what electricity is for?

Last time my SuperHub was off was when there was a power failure just after Christmas, some idiot cut through a cable, I had to re-enter the password on all my devices.
over 73 but not over the hill.
