As the said person is completely anonymous and won't know about this at all then I'm sure they don't mind.

You just dont get how offensive this word is is do you?
To use it at all is appalling. It will have offended many people who read it in the posts.
IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE TO USE THAT WORD AT ALL. IN ANY CONTEXT.

Hi X,
Thank you for your email, that card has been replaced and is no longer valid. I have called into the office twice to provide you with the new details about you were not present on either occasion. Please call me and I will provide the new card details (email is obviously not very secure for such info).
It would make life a lot easier if there was a process to update these details in your absence, and save us all a lot of time and energy for £x.00
Thanks0 -

She would have just been telling you what the till said- doing her job. But you feel the need to think offensive thoughts about her and slag her off.

You'd call someone else a cretin for your mistake? Odd.
He's calling him a cretin because when a card is declined they do not give a reason. The odious twerp added the 'lack of funds' out of his own head, and hence caused the poster considerable embarrassment.
I know how you delight in jumping in to criticise and belittle others at the slightest opportunity, but if you bothered to actually read what was written, you would have seen that the card was blocked, and that funds were not an issue. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

Actually she wasnt. As the till doesnt tell her the card has been declined because of lack of funds she made an assumption thats at best judgemental and possibly just as offensive as the word 'cretin' (which isnt really that offensive at all and wasnt actually spoken out loud by the poster. Anybody trying to score schadenfreude points like that does sound a bit cretinous to be fair.

And the definition of cretin that the poster is taking faux-offence to isn't even the primary definition in the OED, and is certainly not the commonly-understood definition.0

Do you know, I hadnt even gone down that route. I was assuming it was referring to the person as stupid which I agree with. I very much doubt that the poster was using the archaic definition referring to physical deformities due to an uncontrollable thyroid problem.
Another forum I am a member of had a post which referred to the Germanwings pilot as a nutcase and someone objected to that.
Errr .... Hello .....
